Oregon Vacation Only 31 Days Away
Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 06:45 AM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
We only have 31 days until we leave for a 2 week vacation to Southern Oregon. I am excited to walk away from the troubles of financial burdens, house burdens, work burdens and life - and be with my family.

This year will be the first year in 15 years that we will not be staying at the Breaker House. The Breaker House is my father's first beach house he bought back in 1994. We stayed there that year and almost every year since - missing only two years because of risky pregnancies with Spencer and Alexis.

This year we are going to be staying at my father's Sand Castle beach house, a 2 million dollar home right on the beach.

This home is beautiful. Slate floors, grand piano (which actually I believe he sold). And even though it is a beautiful home, it will not be the same as being in my father's first beach house.

This year we are having lots of family join us.

I am looking forward to embracing my father once again and telling him that I love him.

Once Again At The Big Big Ocean
Sunday, Jun 22, 2008, at 05:14 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
We are finally here. After 17 and a half hours of driving, we are at the Sand Castle Beach House.

What a gorgeous view from our family room.

It is a little cool at 62F and a 10-15 MPH winds, but the ocean is beautiful and we are thankful to be here.

After so many hours of driving, I'm having some gin and tonic, laying on the couch and watching the beach from here. Kim and the kids have headed out to walk the beach.

Generally your kids are supposed to ask you “Are We There Yet” during a long drive. Well, last year, Alexis asked repeatedly if we were going to the “Big Big Ocean”. This year, we got her a little fishing pole with a plastic fish on the end. By damn she has gotten quite adept at casting that fish anywhere she wants. She started asking on the way out if she could catch us a fish for dinner. After about ten times, we began counting. In the 17 and a half hours of driving, she only asked us 83 times.

We of course stopped in Weed California so I could pick up some more shot glasses and two fresh "I Love Weed" shirts. A must have.

Beach Walking And Relaxing
Monday, Jun 23, 2008, at 10:15 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today we just relaxed, unpacked our things, and walked the beach. Whenever you get here, the next day you are here melts away the last year of stress. So you lounge around and nap and eat, knowing you have no where to be, no emails to read, no work to be done.

Today the tide was way out so we took advantage and toured the tidal pools. Here is Alexis looking at the anemones and the orange and red starfish.

Today I put a roast in the crock-pot in anticipation of the grandparents and their two kids (Jenn, Mike) getting into town. We'll have roast, mashed potatoes and carrots for dinner.

And finally, we opened all of the blinds and watched the sun dip into the Pacific Ocean.

What a beautiful day.

A Day Of Rest, A Day Of Play
Tuesday, Jun 24, 2008, at 10:13 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today we spent a great deal of time on the beach, watching the tide pools, seeing the star fish and anemonies.

Then we napped. It was great. Just sleeping knowing you didn't have to be anywhere, you didn't have to do anything. And best of all, your family was all around with you.

Where did the day go? Well, I didn't care. I got up at 9:30am, we went to the beach, then we came back, and I slept for three hours. Then I got up, sat down and thought, man, I'm tired, so laid back down and slept for another hour. It is like a year of sorrows, troubles and worries is washing away. Amazingly, I haven't even thought about that shithole that I work at for hours on end today. It has eaten me up the couple of days, but the healling power of this place is beginning to take over.

As the sun set today, Grandpa Hoenie and Spencer Hoenie both used their binoculors to look out at the ocean.

Three generatiions apart, but beautiful, nontheless.

After that, we broke out the drinks.

We mixed and mixed and mixed. After 9 um shots, or so, well, I didn't think too much about it.

Next, we'll hit the hot tub. I think there was some really bad singing going on, but it's all good.

But for now, we are watching the sun set into the beautiful ocean.

What a beautiful place this is, so far removed from reality.

A Day Of Rest

VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today we just relaxed, slept most of the day, walked the beach, ate whenever we wanted and then partied when the sun went down.

And down it went.

The Beach With The Horn
Thursday, Jun 26, 2008, at 08:50 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today we left early and headed up the coast. First we stopped at the Cape Blanco lighthouse where the family toured one of the oldest light houses on the Oregon Coast.

After that, we hit Bandon Oregon, where we shopped, ate very tasty Halibut and Chips, and then hit the beach with the horn.

The beach with the horn is a warning horn on the end of the Coquille River. It sounds about every three minutes to warn boaters. When you sit on the beach looking for agates for a while, you just tune it out.

Here I am looking for agates among the rocks of the jetty. I found a lot of great ones.

Afterwards we headed home and had bbq'd yoshita's chicken, shrimp and steak.

Now we're having gin, rum, vodka, jagermeister, and whatever else we can drink down, and we're going to sit down to a game of bunko.

Crab And Bonfires
Friday, Jun 27, 2008, at 05:52 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today we hung out at the beach house, walked the beach, looked for shells and rocks, slept, and just spent time with all of the family that is here.

Afterwards, we headed down to the port in Gold Beach and picked up fifteen crab. This year has been a bad year so crab here is $6.75 a pound live. Well, fifteen crab that average 2-2.5 to 3.0 pounds each was costly, but in the end it is so worth it.

Bob and I donned our chef hats, got four pots boiling on the stove and went to town feeding fourteen people.

Afterwards, we finished our rounds of Bunco. This time we were playing for money, and our moms were holding the cash.

Later, after some Captain Morgan, Lime Gin and whatever else, including roasting a couple, well, roasting, we set out onto the beach after sunset. A group of firefighters who were in town from Southern California were bon firing on the beach. It was fucking awesome.

So we roasted some more, sat at the fire, and played until the wee hours of the morning. I don't remember anything after midnight so...

Jet Boats
Saturday, Jun 28, 2008, at 05:53 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Ahh the Jet Boats. The Rogue River starts at Crater Lake and dumps into the ocean at Gold Beach. There are hundreds and hundreds of miles of river that span the state of Oregon.

There is a touring company in Gold Beach called Jerry's Rogue Jets. My dad has sent thousands of his rental people to Jerry's, so Jerry gave us five tickets for free. It was the ride of a lifetime.

We cruised up the Rogue in a jet boat that could fit about 30 or so people. The dude driving the boat did freaking doughnuts and more. We hit a little white water here and there, but saw Golden Eagles, Osprey, Deer and a lot more wildlife.

It was an awesome day.

Tonight is the last night the family will be here, so tonight we are having enchiladas, we will be drinking whatever we can, roasting and enjoying ourselves.

A Day Of Rest
Sunday, Jun 29, 2008, at 06:14 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
This morning early, over half the family went home. They could only spend a week out here, so they had to take off. That leaves us and the grandparents, so it will now be a quiet week. Today we just slept, watched TV, read books, watched the ocean, ate and did absolutely nothing.

But last night, we drank, roasted and enjoyed.

Here is my BIL Mike and I playing the drums.

I am so getting some drums when I get back to the Moridor, er, Salt Lake. Those late night camp fires in my back yard require some drums.

Thanks Mike, it was great connecting with you again this trip. I had a great time with you.

Giant Prawns And Coho Salmon
Monday, Jun 30, 2008, at 05:01 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today Kim, the kids, the Grandparents and my dad headed North to Bandon. I've been there twice already so I just decided to take the day off and stay at the beach house.

Tonight? Giant Prawns and Coho Salmon on the barbie.

These Prawns were $19 bucks a pound and the Coho was $15. It is so totally worth it.

The Salmon is wrapped in foil with fresh baby dill and butter, just a hint of garlic, pepper and salt.

The Prawns are dipped in seasoning salt, and basted with butter until they are cooked.

I feel like I've already had a years worth of rest and it has only been a week. Well, we have another wonderful week to go.

Brookings Oregon, The Sand Castle Beach House
Wednesday, Jul 2, 2008, at 06:42 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
We slept in today and then headed for Brookings Oregon. Brookings is about 35 miles South of Gold Beach - where we are staying. It is a big coastal town with lots of shops and tasty restaurants.

We ate at a tasty Mexican restaurant that we have eaten many times before, headed into the shops and hit the old book stores.

I found an original copy of a 1914 Edgar Rice Burroughs book called At The Earth's Core. I had originally read this book when I was six years old, and it was good to find it again to read.

Back in Gold Beach, here is picture of the Sand Castle Beach House that we're staying in.

What a beautiful home right on the beach.

Well, tonight we are having a huge corned beef with new potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Then settling down to watch the sun dip into the Pacific Ocean.

Pirates We Yar, Ar!
Thursday, Jul 3, 2008, at 06:41 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today we got up early and headed back up to Bandon one more time. Tomorrow we will head down to Gold Beach for the fireworks and parties, but today, it was back up North.

In Bandon, I picked up a new winter coat for myself, and both kids. Kim got a nice zip up.

Here are Spencer and Lexi, dressed up as pirates in Bandon:

After that we once again hit the beach, looking for agates. Dad and I got tired, went into town got some take and bake pizzas and headed back to the beach house. The girls will follow us later.

Only 3 more days left in this beautiful place. The grandparents are leaving on Saturday, so just a few days left.

Dad And Son On The Fourth Of July
Friday, Jul 4, 2008, at 12:37 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
We had a great fourth of July out here this year. Lobster tail, shrimp on the barbie and tasty steaks.

Here I am with my dad out on the deck.

Ahh yes, bbq'd shrimp.

Afterwards, it was watermelon for everyone.

When the sun went down, we watched the fireworks. We also watched somebody light the beach dunes on fire, but they managed to get it put out. Who would do such a thing?

Second To Last Day Here
Saturday, Jul 5, 2008, at 05:46 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
Today was our second to last day here.

We went to the Port Hole Cafe today and met my father for lunch. Then we picked up shrimp, crab, salmon - butter and lemons. Tonight, we are having a seafood fest.

Tomorrow, we will be packing and cleaning all day to get ready for the two days travel it will take to come back to Salt Lake City.

But today, well, the sun was shining, the ocean was endless, and we loved it.

In an hour or so, shrimp, steak, crab and salmon. You all in SLC, can SUCK IT HARD.

In three days we will be back in Salt Lake.

Even so, there are a thousand positives. The house is sold, the house payment I now i now have is over a grand less than I had before. No longer are we bleeding. Now, we can actually put money AWAY to save. Life is MUCH better than it was.

And now, it is time to get back to living.

This is the last entry I will make until I get back to the Moridor.

See you in four or five days.

Back Home Safely Again
Tuesday, Jul 8, 2008, at 04:47 PM
VACATION 2008   -GUID-
We're back again, after 1010 miles.

First day Lexi puked hard and we had that to deal with. The drive was just long as hell.

Second day wasn't so bad, but it is seriously hard on the kids when you are going back home. Sitting in their little car seats with four-point seat belts just doesn't help.

Even so, we're home. The grass is burnt, the garden, OMG, the garden is nothing more than a freaking jungle. I should have put down weed block.

/Smack Head.

Well, I'm watering right now because the grass is seriously parched.

At least we are back safe.

We took just under 401 pictures this time. Last year was only 299 pictures.
