Networks Padding Shows Is Pissing Me Off

Last nite I clicked on my Direct TV Guide and scheduled LOST on ABC at 8pm. Then I clicked over to CBS and scheduled CSI:NY for 9pm. My Direct TV then told me it couldn't schedule CSI because it was conflicting with LOST. What? One comes on at 8pm and one comes on at 9pm - or so I thought. What I found was ABC scheduled LOST to come on at 8:02pm and end at 9:02pm. This made it impossible to schedule anything else at 9pm because it conflicted. I was not happy.

I started to research and found that the networks are doing this a lot these days to "mess with their competitors."
So one of our least favorite things that the TV networks have been doing to mess with their competitors-padding a few extra minutes to the end of shows in order to create scheduling conflicts so that TiVos and other digital video recorders won't record a show on another channel that comes on afterwards-is apparently getting worse, with Nielsen Media Research reporting that lots more shows are doing this. The networks might think they're being clever, and on one level we're at least little impressed that they're even thinking about this sort of stuff, but in the long run all they're doing is alienating people and convincing DVR owners that they either need to download shows online or upgrade to a dual-tuner DVR that eliminates scheduling conflicts. -Engadget
To the people who say "you're just missing two minutes" keep in mind the problem is the Tivo or Direct TV will fail to record a program that is in the following time slot if it goes over because there is a conflict for those two minutes.

To the people who say "get a VCR", you have to understand the whole point of a Tivo is that you don't have to manage it. Using a VCR is like the stone age and represents everything the TIVO is designed to get rid of. I have two VCRs. They are gathering dust in the basement on a shelf. I actually have MORE DVD players now than I do TV's (4 TV's, 6 DVD players).

TO the people who say "get a life", understand that the Tivo and Direct TV program guide is a liberating technology, like a cell phone. You used to have to wait at home for a phone call. Now you can get on with your life and hook up with your friends when they call - no matter where you are. The TIVO does the same thing - it liberates you from watching a program when it is on and manually managing a VCR. You can live your life when you want to live it. Sometimes, when you're brain dead, it is nice to be able to watch TV, and when you do that, watch something you actually want to see.

Well, once this guy gets to the roof, we won't have to worry about TV anymore.

Star Trek: Enterprise Cancelled?

From SlashDot:
There seems to be no avoiding it this season: TrekToday is reporting that the Enterprise production crew has been told they will all be fired in March, after completing filming on another four episodes. If true, that leaves only very little time to participate in the Save Enterprise campaign. But even if Enterprise is cancelled, all may not be lost: Rick Berman said today he's working on a new Trek feature film that will have "a larger scope and budget" than ever.

Sick And Tired Of KUTV Channel 2 Breaking News

BREAKING NEWS! GUST OF WIND BLOWS IN SALT LAKE CITY!

Last nite was the series finale of Everybody Loves Raymond. The wife and I have watched this show for 9 years. We bought the last two seasons on DVD. On CBS from 7pm to 8pm they were doing cast interviews, behind the scenes and more. Every FIVE minutes KUTV Channel 2 had to break in and let us know that it was storming. Yes, I can look out my fucking window and see the goddamn clouds, rain and wind, I don't need KUTV telling me what I already know! We missed TWO of the commentaries from the cast members because a GUST OF FUCKING WIND was more important. Every five to 10 minutes they broke in to let us know yep, a storm was outside.

And Mark Koebel that hairdo of yours, in the words of Gilbert Gottfried, "What The Fuck!?"

I am so sick of KUTV Channel 2 and their damned stupid BREAKING NEWS. Cat up a tree? BREAKING NEWS.... old guy dies of old age? BREAKING NEWS? wind gust blows Michelle king's skirt up? BREAKING NEWS!

Jared Christensen talks about it here: Breaking News? Let's Fix It..

This producer got fired for cutting on CSI:NY.

CBS, We're Tired Of Your "Survivor"
Friday, Nov 17, 2006, at 05:41 AM
TELEVISION   -GUID-
My wife and I have watched Survivor since it first came out. Yes, we watched as Richard Hatch strut around naked and then go on to win the first million dollar prize. Of course he just slightly forgot to pay the taxes on that money and is now spending some time in PMITA prison.

This year is the last that my wife and I will be watching Survivor.

Survivor over the years has grown into a lying, "show you what we want you to see" television show. In the beginning, you could get an idea of what the Survivor's felt and their allegiances to each other. Now you can't. Why? Because CBS edits the Survivor show to purposefully lie to you and mislead you into thinking the wrong things. They show you cuts of Survivors talking to each other, or personal reflective thoughts from individual Survivors that create bias in your own mind about the direction the entire Survivor team is going. Then when it comes down to Tribal Council, the person you think would be voted off turns out entirely to be someone else.

Selective provisioning of information. I'm tired of it. They continuously mislead - just like the normal press does today. Take things out of context, miss-quote a Survivor member, or only show one side of the story rather than the whole thing.

After 14 seasons of Survivor, the wife and I are sick of it. The only thing now on Survivor worth watching is the challenges for reward, immunity and Tribal Council. The rest of the time is nonsense filler that makes no sense and has no connection to the game - because of the way that CBS edits it - you can never trust the direction presented to you. The rest of the show is absolute filler.

If a Survivor has nice tits and a sweet round ass - they are going to get all of the attention and most of the film time. If they are quiet and help the tribe out - they are mostly ignored. If they are obnoxious and are general idiots, again, they'll get most of the attention and film time - of course just before they get voted off.

I just freaking hate it how you can never trust what is going on. You never know the big picture. You are never shown what is really going on - only what CBS wants you to see. Whenever you think there is some kind of bonding going on, it turns out to be false. Whenever you think the voting is going a particular way, it ends up going totally opposite.

So now when Survivor is on, it's on in the background but we ignore it. When the challenges and the council pop up - then we watch. But this is the last time that we will be watching Survivor.

We have brains CBS, but we don't like being bamboozled or lied to. Heck, we can get that from our politicians or even our employers.

Steve Benson nailed it:

"Kramer's" Racist Tirade -- Caught on Tape:
Richards, who played the wacky Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show "Seinfeld," appeared onstage at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Kyle Doss, an African-American, told TMZ he and some friends were in the cheap seats and he was playfully heckling Richards when suddenly, the comedian lost it.

The camera started rolling just as Richards began his attack, screaming at one of the men, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f***ing fork up your ass."

Richards continued, "You can talk, you can talk, you're brave now motherf**ker. Throw his ass out. He's a nigger! He's a nigger! He's a nigger! A nigger, look, there's a nigger!"
