Our Theatre room for watching movies on the big screen.
|
|
Today we started construction on our new theatre room.
When we finished our basement, I wired speakers in the ceiling for our basement room. But I have always wanted a theatre room where the room was dedicated to watching movies and our favorite - the Utah Jazz. Our house is not that big, so this theatre room is only going to measure 12 feet wide by 18 feet long. No problem, that can fit two seats on each side with a row down the middle, with about six seats back.
The room will be fully wired for speakers in the ceiling, plugs on the ceiling for a ceiling mounted video projector, extra plugs and extra speaker wire. In addition there will be cable wired and full Internet connections routed to our home server.
For now, it's demolition work as we begin.
First, we start off with a room that hasn't been used in years that has just a little bit of junk in it.
Yep, there is just a little junk in it, but that will get cleaned up.
Now that the junk is cleared and the old carpet is up, it's time to start tearing off all the old sheet rock.
Sheet rock is almost all gone, still have to tear out some old frames and lights.
On the other side, we took out the wall and are extending the room 7 extra feet. The laundry room will have a new wall with a sliding door for easy entry. That wall goes up tomorrow. Right now it's just pure demolition.
Now that all the walls are torn out and sheet rock off, it's time to get every nail and screw out of the walls so the new sheet rock can go up later. Note Randall working on the duct work, he is the man who gets things done right.
Great. All the nails and everything poking out is done, time to sweep up and take a break for the day.
Perfect, all cleaned up and ready for the next step: Wiring the new "can" lights, speaker wires and extra plugs.
More to come later.
|
Now that all of the sheet rock is off and the floors have been somewhat cleaned up, it's time for wiring. Here I am wiring speaker wire into the ceiling that has heavy shielding and will support ceiling mounted speakers.
Here I am holding CAT5e with HDMI still to go. $352 bucks for 30 feet of cable. When I hook it up to my DVD player and ceiling mounted projector, I'll have the highest possible quality you can buy.
The pocket door framing is ready to go for the sliding door into the laundry.
Tonite the wiring will be complete, all plugs will be ready to go, all wiring finished and the can lights will be in the ceiling.
This weekend: Sheet rock.

| Sheet Rock Finished - Next Step : Mud And Tape Tuesday, Aug 22, 2006, at 07:49 AM THEATRE ROOM -GUID- | | |
The sheet rock on the theatre room is completed! Tomorrow the mudding begins.
I was so excited to see my Sony Projector VPL-HS60 in action, I put it on a center table, hooked up my HDMI DVD player, threw in The Lord Of The Rings The Two Towers, and half-assed projected it on a sheet rock wall.
That's 80" across by 45" high. It's not centered nor on a screen nor keystoned or anything. I just wanted to see it.
I stood all amazed at the picture quality - even for being projected on sheet rock with screws and divits. Can't wait to see what it looks like once it's mounted on the ceiling and on a 92" HTDV Model B Screen.
Soon... Very soon!
|
The mudding has begun. Even though this is three boxes of mud so far, there will be two more full boxes of mud put on the wall before it is ready to be sanded.
|
The mudding and sanding has been completed.
The ceiling has been texturized and just needs to dry now.
Next the base boards go up, the lights go in the ceiling and the pocket door goes in - including frame, handle and trim. After that it's time to put four gallons of white primer paint on the walls and paint the floor with a gray concrete paint. Later next year we will tile the whole room, but for now a throw rug will do nicely.

| Construction Complete - Time To Clean, Caulk And Primer Wednesday, Aug 30, 2006, at 06:27 AM THEATRE ROOM -GUID- | | |
The construction is finished and the lights are in the ceiling. Now it's time to clean the old floor to prepare it for painting and just to get all the dust and old mud out.
The floor has been cleaned up and the first coat of primer has been put on the walls. Now to sand it good again and put another two coats on.
Hopefully by this Saturday the whole room will be put together.

| Theatre Room Painting Complete - Time To Set Up The Electronics Thursday, Aug 31, 2006, at 10:14 AM THEATRE ROOM -GUID- | | |
I finished three full coats of paint on the walls tonite and even finished the floor. That gives me almost 72 hours until I begin installing the electronics.
Can't wait for Saturday. Hopefully by Saturday night I'll be watching my first movie.
Stay tuned.

| Almost Complete, Watched My First Movie Saturday, Sep 2, 2006, at 11:01 AM THEATRE ROOM -GUID- | | |
The speakers are mounted, base box is in, wiring is complete. The screen is up, projector is mounted and cables are in place.
The first movie I watched? Star Wars Episode I. Meesa Noosa. /eyeroll
I'll post one more shot today when I have the throw rug down and the seats put in.

Our Theatre room is finished for now. Yesterday the family came over for dinner. Aunts, Uncles, Brothers and Sisters, Moms and Dads. We had burgers and corn on the cobb. Dad, myself Mike and Jake sat down and watched Star Trek Nemesis.
Mike asked if he could move in. Dad said he'd found his place in the world.
Yes, that's a fully working Japanese slot machine in the corner. Lexi loves to play it. It takes "tokens" rather than real money.
Later on we will paint the walls, but that is a project for this winter.
For now I can finally relax and watch movies.
Lexi is tucked in a chair with her blanket, watching NEMO.
Hey, it looks like I inspired my friend Ryan to work on his own basement theatre room.

Today I ran all over hell picking up parts and things that I needed to finish off my theatre room.
Now that we have our tax refund back for 2006 - and I sold one of my computers for $400, I have started to continue work on my theatre room. Today I ordered carpet from RC Willey (a local sell-you-anything company) and I began to take the room down.
Here I have cleaned the whole room out, taken down the projector, the speakers, and taped off everything in the room. The carpeting is going to be a very dark grey and should be here in about three weeks. The walls are going to be painted a flat black so they do not reflect light from the movie screen - but the paint is a special kind of paint that can be easily cleaned if needed.
My old SONY base box after six years was clipping and sounded like shit. So I replaced it with an MTX 12" subwoofer that I picked up from Circuit City for $149. I already hooked this base box up and played a couple of movies. I'm telling you - you don't just "hear" this basebox, you feel it.
I took a four foot board that that belongs to the encasing and sealed it in plastic - that way the board was very smooth and would not scratch the HDTV screen. Then with the help from Kim (my wife), I ran the board across the HDTV screen and began taping it. About a month ago, I decided that the HDTV screen with pull down just wasn't cutting it - there were too many ripples and that caused distortion during projector movies.
See where the red arrows are? See the ripples? Light from a projector hits whatever is close first, then whatever is further away after that. If you have ripples, then light hits the top of the ripples first, then the valleys of the ripples next. This causes both distortion and shadows. Both are annoying as hell and totally unwanted.
Being a perfectionist, I decided there was no way the pull down was going to work. So I took out the razorblade and I cut the screen out of the metal pull down and tossed the pull down metal parts in the garbage. Then I used a level to make sure the screen portion (the viewable portion) was perfectly level. Then I measured from side to side to make sure the screen was positioned exactly center from left to right. Then I began taping it off, pressing the screen down gently with the plastic covered board (to prevent scraping or scratching) until Kim and I had weeded out every last bubble. With the tape in place, there isn't a single fold - not one, not a single bubble anywhere against the flat wall.
In order for this to work properly, we have to have the screen on the wall while we do construction. So here we are making sure the screen is fully protected against any kind of paint or damage while we work. This is heavy plastic we are putting up and will take it down when we are done. I dont want to damage this $400 dollar HTDV reflective screen.
As time goes on I will document pictures - I have flat black paint and I am going to surround the screen in a very nice wooden border - painted perfect black to hide any other light than the screen.
For now, the room is torn apart and there will be no movies for a little while (sad!) but once it is done, it will be more perfect than it was for the last 7 months.

| Framing And Caulking Completed, Time To Paint Sunday, Feb 25, 2007, at 01:36 AM THEATRE ROOM -GUID- | | |
Finished the framing around the screen and all of the sealked caulking.
Now for the paint. Once this dries it will all be one color, a flat black.
I'm done for today - I have too many other chores to do to keep working all afternoon.
|
The first coat of paint has been finished on the theatre room. It will take over night to cure. Tomorrow night I will finish painting the room completely and let it fan dry (as it is fan drying right now). By Saturday, I will be able to start moving everything back in and RCWILLEY will be here to measure the room for carpet.
Only a little more to go.

| Painting Complete, Now We Wait For Carpeting Friday, Mar 2, 2007, at 06:47 AM THEATRE ROOM -GUID- | | |
The painting in the room is complete. Tonight I hooked all of the equiptment back up and put Nemo in. Looks great - the blur is just because the video was playing while I was taking the picture. You have to realize that is 80 inches across by 45 inches high (making it a 90" screen from lower corner to upper corner).
Tomorrow RCWILLEY is going to be here to measure the room for carpeting. Then the carpet should be here within 3-4 weeks.
|
The theatre room was totally cleaned out and ready for carpet:
But now the carpet is down and the room is back together:
I'm very happy with that. No more taking the room down, and now we can go back to watching movies again. Phew, what a long four weeks.

Last night my bro in law and two good friends got together to watch The Silver Surfer and Transformers in my theatre room. I don't think I've ever made shrimp on the barbi as good as I did last night. Steak, shrimp, baked potato, beer and chips - it was a great night.
Silver Surfer is an eh, feh kinda movie. Better than the first one, but still nowhere near as good as Transformers. Transformers rocked. It was action packed from start to end. Good stuff.
Thanks for coming over guys, we will definitely do it again.

Tonight I watched my final two movies in my theatre room.
The Matrix Revolutions and The Fellowship Of The Ring.
Then I carefully and skillfully took my room apart, including everything. The projector, speakers, stereo, DVD and my 92” screen.
So sad.
So very sad. I shed many tears taking the room apart. I love this room.
I worked so hard on this theatre. Many of my friends came and enjoyed movies here, I enjoyed over 100 movies here.
Now it is gone, nothing but an empty room.
I hope that my new theatre room is as grand.
Only time will tell.

I got the projector hooked up and bought a 30 foot HDMI cable (only $130 this time, rather than $399 a year and a half ago). I hooked up the speakers where the prior home owner had installed speaker wires.
First movie we watched? CARS. Then I watched Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
I am so happy to have a theatre back.
This time I did it right. I measured the exact distance from the screen to the projector. This is the maximum, minimum distance from the screen to the projector. Once I had it perfect, I measured the distance between the horizontal, vertical, and distance from the screen.
Then I set it up.
It is awesome. All I need to do now is frame the screen in proper and it should be perfect.
So glad to have a theatre back. Once you have had one, you can't go back.
