This weekend was fathers day. We announced to the whole family that Kim and I are 8 and a half weeks pregnant with our second child. Kim ordered a shirt off the internet that said "I'm going to be a big sister! Lexi Lu Lu". It took the grand parents a few minutes to pick it up but before we knew it they were on the phone with the entire family.
My dad, who is in Oregon, I sent him pictures of Lexi in her shirt. He called within an hour.
We're due January 30th. :)
Today I'm at home with a cold. I hate colds, this is the fourth cold I've had in seven months. Ahh kids. :)
Our pregnancy is not going well and it is at the same time. This time it isn't Kim's blood pressure that is causing problems, now it's a subchorionic hemorrhage.
There is bleeding in the uterus below the placental sack. We are fortunate that the placenta is connected on the opposite side, however, the bleeding is a big concern.
Kim now has to go in weekly for ultrasounds to check it. Yesterday she was bleeding so bad we rushed in to the doctor.
The hemmorage area inside the uterus has filled an area 3 centimeters by 1 centimeter with blood.
The doctor says that we are not out of the woods yet with this. He says he has seen women who have gone to full term with this and have had no problems, however, he said that he also has had patients who have ended up in misscarriages because of this. We can only go day by day.
He said that if she soaks a heavy-duty pad with blood in one hour then we are in danger. She has not come close to that yet.
The baby is doing just fine and is very active, bobbing it's head around and moving it's little arms and legs. The heartbeat is perfect 180 beats per minute so we are very hopeful. It's amazing to see the little person in there moving around and so sad to think we could possibly loose it.
We are now into week 12 and the bleeding has stopped. The hemmorage has gone down and the little person in there is just about doing jumping jacks.
Lexi can now say "meow", "woof" and "mooo" and always finds the gold bug before her daddy does. Her favorite book is still "Head Shoulders Knees and Toes".
We had our 18th week prenatal checkup yesterday and found out that we're having a boy. Now it's time to put the names up on the board for our favorite boy names. We're both very excited but very reserved at the same time. Only five more months to go!
Things are going very well in our pregnancy. We are well into our third trimester at week 30. Only 10 more weeks to go.
There have been no problems with blood pressure, but pregnancy in the 3rd trimester can be tough. Right now Kim has a cold and she can't take anything for it. Most cold medications can cause an increase in blood pressure and are not good for the baby. So poor Kim suffers with coughing, congestion and just plain being miserable.
I do distinctly remember her saying, while she was laying in the hospital bed after Alexis was born... "NEVER AGAIN!"
Women never learn, or they quickly forget. Odd too because a woman will say to you.. "Remember what you said to me six years, three weeks and five days ago about not being sensative enough?"
Kim went in for her 32nd week PST (pregnancy stress test) and there is some bad news. Spencer is doing absolutely fine - there is no issue with that, however, there has been twice the amount of protein in Kim's urin as last week and the week before that.
Right now Kim is on high-risk every 7 day evaluation, plus every four hour blood pressure monitoring at home (except at night when sleeping). Protein in the urine is called Hyperuricemia, it's a precursor to PIH or Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension.
So we are on that road again, her BP has gone from average 120/80 to 137/91 and has been balacing between.
Her OBGYN specializes in this kind of pregnancy. He told her today that next Friday if her urin still contains as many proteins plus a little more - then the pregnancy is over and she will be admitted immediately. Spencer may be born as early as next weekend - a very high possibility.
This week Kim and I are putting together a care package for her, a bag containing everything she will need to be comfortable in the hospital.
This is going to be expensive. I was hoping Spencer would not come until January, but since he most likely will be here this month, I will have to pay the $4000 deductible this year, and $4000 more next year. Don't you just love health care?
There is a small, unlikely chance that the protein won't be any more than it was, we will have to see. But all indications are that Spencer will probably be here within two weeks.
Everything is well today. There was no protein at all this time. Her blood pressure is still on the upper side of normal, but everything is fine.
No baby this weekend.
They did do a blood draw to check for other abnormalities. They are also worried about what is called "Helper" disease, although I can't find medical reference to it.
As usual, never trust what doctors say. The birth has been postponed to 4:30pm on Friday the 13th, this is after it was postponed until 12:30pm the same day. I told Kim in the beginning if the baby was born sometime before midnight on Monday, I would be amazed. The doctors have not failed me in this regard.
I am taking the day off tomorrow to be with her the whole day, and the next week as well.
Lexi last nite woke up puking from 12:30am until 4:30am, which made the entire night very rough. Today she seems to be doing much better and I'm glad she hasn't got some major flu bug.
Stress is high but we're managing. Now, just one more day.
Spencer Lynn Born At 5:39pm Weighing 6 Pounds 14 Ounces - 19 Inches Long Friday, Jan 13, 2006, at 09:14 AM SPENCER - SECTION 1 -GUID-
Another Infymus was born!
Spencer Lynn was born today, January 13th, 2006 at 5:39pm. He weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and was 19.2 inches long. He has a beautiful head of red hair, just like his daddy and his big sister. He was delivered via C-Section at LDS Hospital - both mother and baby are doing fine and are resting comfortably.
I am very excited to have a son; I have been looking forward to his appearance for the last nine months! Alexis, Spencer's big sister (2 years old) was very sweet and gentle and I'm sure will be a mother hen as time goes on.
Mother and baby will come home after a few days and we look forward to the marathon feedings and changings.
I'm grateful for my family who has drawn together during this special occasion and offered their love and support. It truly is a blessing and special occasion for us and we greatly cherish it.
Here are some quick pictures of Spencer, myself holding Spencer alone, myself and Doctor Esplin, and my wife's parents (my father lives in Oregon and was unable to attend), and my red-headed daughter, Alexis.
Kim and Spencer are doing just fine. He is eating properly, maintaining his own body temperature and has passed all of his tests. He may have to spend a little time under the bilirubin lights, but not too much.
Kim is healing well and is now able to stand up, shower and is well on the road to recovery.
Both Kim and Spencer are scheduled to come home on Tuesday night (1/17).
As a card said from my father, "Congratulations on your new alarm clock!"
We are quite prepared.
I also must make a correction on Spencer's hair color. It is not red - in fact, it is quite blond. Under the florescent lights and his hair being wet, it appeared to be red and everyone seemed to confirm that it was. Later that night, when had a proper bath and his scalp massaged, his hair perked up and it is his mother's color - blondish brown. It will be a few weeks before his eye color comes out, but that I'm sure will be just as blue as his mother's eyes.
Kim was admitted back to LDS Hospital last nite with a BP of 168/106. On top of that her doctor believes she has a virus (either cold or flu). To be safe, she was re-admitted and spent the night. Today she is back home in bed, sleeping while I take care of Spencer and Alexis. Better safe than sorry.
Spencer is doing very well. He smiled for me for the first time early this morning around 4am.
Alexis is taking things in stride, being only 28 months old. I spend just as much time as I can with her while caring for Spencer.
As soon as Mother gets the strength back hopefully things will get back to a more normal schedule.
Spencer is a lot stronger than Alexis was when she was his age. Alexis was only 2 pounds 10 ounces and came home at around 6 pounds. Spencer came home at nearly 7 pounds.
He is far more feisty than Alexis was. He can lift his little head up in the air and look around, then plop it back down. I don't know his little personality yet, other than he's quite feisty.
When he wants his bottle, he wants it NOW.
Can't wait until this next winter when he's doing his best to keep up with his big sister.
Spencer's first trip (out of the hospital) to the Doctor was today. He's gained 5 and a half pounds and is exactly where he's supposed to be. He's got a clogged tear duct but it should clear up as he gets bigger. So far so good and no problems.
Ok, a friend of mine mentioned that too much of the Mormon Curtain has been bleeding over into Infymus. I apologize, I can't help it.
So, here's an update on Spencer.
Look at this little guy smiling at his daddy.
Interestingly enough, he is growing physically and mentally 3 times faster than Alexis did. I think he is going to be 100 times more a handful than she ever was.
Still, there are beautiful moments as shown above.
Spencer is growing by leaps and bounds. He's already into bigger diapers again and now he's giggling all the time. He has started grabbing at everything he sees in front of him and he has found that his fist tastes the very best.
Spencer has an interesting personality compared to Alexis. While being shy at only 5 months old, he is one of the happiest babies I have ever seen.
Here he is sitting on my lap watching Alexis going down the slides. He's a playful little guy who wants to get up and move, if only his little legs would support him.
Spencer is growing so much. He is going to be 5 months old this week. Look at those beautiful blue eyes of his - obviously he got them from this mother.
Note that his daddy used blond on his hair this nite.
Last nite we went to the park again, we just can't get enough of that. I love walking with my family, smelling the fresh June air, the plants, trees and flowers. Seeing the sunset over the Great Salt Lake - and of course, Alexis and I picking large dandelions and letting them go one by one in the wind - all of this is magic. All of this is spirituality of being alive.
Here I am lifting my son Spencer in the air and absolutely enjoying my family time.
Spencer is almost to the point where he can maintain sitting up for longer periods of time. Since it has been 104 degrees every day for the last week - and forcast 104 for another couple of weeks - we have taken to going outside only after the sun is nearly down.
Here he is sitting on the lawn in the back yard, getting adjusted to the feeling of cool green grass in summertime.
Kim bought Spencer this chew... "Thing", I don't know what it's called. All you do is mash stuff up in it and he can gum it to his heart's delight. Here he is as happy as a clam.
Spencer here is eating dinner at the table with the family.
He is so different from Alexis. He eats everything. Alexis at his age would gag on every little thing, preferring baby food. With Spencer we just chop it up into little pieces and he goes to town. Tonight we had Penne Pollo in a marinara sauce with meatballs. He gobbled every bite.
Spencer turned 9 months old on the 13th of September. He now weighs in at 20 pounds - just 10 pounds lighter than his sister Alexis who is now 3 years old.
Spencer is dying to crawl. He is inches from doing it. He can get himself up from any position and he pulls forward like he is going to crawl - and then stops shy of actually doing it. Any day now he will be racing around the house on all fours.
Spencer has finally started feeling better after being sick for two straight weeks. Here he is sitting in his tub running a fever and just wanting to be held.
