| Wendy's founder Dave Thomas dies at 69 Tuesday, Jan 8, 2002, at 07:21 AM REMEBERANCE -GUID- | | |
According to an article published by The Associated Press, Dave Thomas, the pitchman whose homespun ads
built Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers into one of the world's most successful fast-food franchises, has died.
He was 69.
Thomas died around midnight at his home in Florida, the company said Tuesday.
The cause of death was not given. Thomas had been undergoing dialysis for a kidney problem since
early 2001, and had quadruple heart bypass surgery in December 1996.
Company officials were meeting at Wendy's headquarters in the Columbus suburb of Dublin and
planned an announcement later Tuesday morning.
The founder and senior chairman of Wendy's International became a household name when he
began pitching his burgers and fries in television commercials in 1989. The smiling Thomas,
always wearing a white short-sleeved shirt and red tie, touted the virtues of fast-food in
humorous ads, sometimes featuring stars such as bluesman B.B. King and soap opera queen Susan Lucci.
"As long as it works, I'll continue to do the commercials," Thomas said in a 1991
interview. "When it's not working any longer, then I'm history."

| The Space Shuttle Columbia - Remembrance Monday, Feb 3, 2003, at 10:05 AM REMEBERANCE -GUID- | | |
I would like to take a personal moment of silence for the seven astronauts of the Space Shuttle Columbia.
JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, Houston, Texas (CNN) -- The space shuttle Columbia, with seven astronauts aboard, broke up as it descended over central Texas
Saturday toward a planned landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Residents as far east as Shreveport, Louisiana, reported seeing and feeling an apparent
explosion. Search-and-rescue teams from the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area were alerted and area residents were urged to stay away from any possible debris
from the shuttle, which may be hazardous, said NASA public affairs officer James Hartfield. President Bush was being briefed at Camp David, Maryland, and was
expected to return to the White House by noon. The administration was preparing to convene a "domestic event" conference among all domestic and military
agencies that may be involved in the next step. An administration official said the shuttle's altitude -- over 200,000 feet -- made it "highly unlikely" that the shuttle
fell victim to a terrorist act. NASA officials said they last had contact with the shuttle about 9 a.m. EST, and it had been expected to touch down at about 9:16 a.m. EST.
Rick Husband, William "Willie McCool, Michael Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark and Ilan Ramon.
You will sorely be missed.
Columbia is the oldest of NASA's shuttle fleet, first launched in 1981. It was on its 28th mission.

Earl Littlewood died today. He will be missed. Twice a year or more we would gather the family from all corners of the State and have a BBQ in Earl's back yard. Their family, our family, and more family - in some way we are all connected.
Thank you for the memories Earl. We will still continue to BBQ and remember you often.
Earl Alfred Littlewood Swede Earl Alfred (Swede) Littlewood completed his sojourn on earth on Monday March 15, 2004 after a heroic battle with cancer and heart disease. He was welcomed into heaven by his parents Alfred and Marion (McPhail) Littlewood and his brother Donald (Bud) Littlewood and his sister Lavern Ryan. His family and friends who have gathered to celebrate his life include: his loving wife, best friend and caring nurse - Dolly; his sons, James, Terry, Bruce and Rod and his daughter Lisa; his sister Joyce Woodmansee; Carol and Gary deMik; Ron and Barbara Hanson; Robert and Diana Workman; 12 grandchildren and hundreds of friends and neighbors. Swede was born 6 Feb 1925 in Salt Lake City. He fought in World War II in the Navy aboard the USS Stockham and later settled in North Salt Lake with his bride to raise his family. As a family we've always been proud of our dad because of the way he lived his life and taught us to love one another and life. After almost 30 years he retired from Eimco. He was a charter member of the North Salt Lake Fire Dept and became its heart and chief for over 18 years. Swede fought long and hard battling problems with health but he always had a strong positive attitude. He spent his time being with those that he loved doing the things he enjoyed. He has been a great example and inspiration to us and will be missed by all that knew him. Friends and family can share their love at 835 N. 400 E, North Salt Lake (the former Valley Music Hall) on Monday, March 22 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. A procession to the graveside services will be conducted that afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Lakeview Memorial Estates, 1640 East Lakeview Dr. in Bountiful. (Donations in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Fund or cancer research or Hospice.)

| Daniel Allen Taylor - May 26, 1966 - Oct 26, 2005 Wednesday, Oct 26, 2005, at 08:08 AM REMEBERANCE -GUID- | | |
Daniel Allen Taylor

Daniel Allen Taylor 1966 ~ 2005 Born May 26, 1966 to Don Scott and Mary Sutherland Taylor. He left his earthly family to be reunited with his spiritual family on Oct. 26, 2005. He will be greatly missed. He was an elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from Olympus High School. He studied architecture and civil engineering at the University of Utah but he did not complete his studies. He loved to play the piano and organ for the ward. He took pleasure in solitary walks in the canyons and foothills, observing any plants and animals great and small. Many times he hiked and camped with his father. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents. He is survived by his father and brothers James Taylor, Shawn Taylor, a step-mother Carleen Hammond, a step-brother Marc Hammond, step-sisters Joleen Huffman and Patricia Huffman. As per Daniel's wishes there will be no public viewing. A memorial gathering will be held to celebrate his life on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005 from 6-8 p.m.at the Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Dr. Salt Lake City, UT.
I attended the funeral of a friend last night. Daniel had been a member of the Mormon Church his whole life, but being a practicing homosexual, he was resigned only to play the piano and sing in the choir. Three years ago Daniel moved to San Francisco. Two years ago he was diagnosed with AIDS but he refused to believe that he was infected. He put it out of his mind and continued to live - all the while his health began to decline. About six months ago, AIDS had ravaged his body and mind so badly, he no longer understood who he was or where he was. His father took a train out to SF and brought him home. At local hospitals again they reiterated that Daniel had AIDS and needed immediate AIDS treatment - again he refused. Over the last few days of his life he slipped into a coma and died peacefully there.
It was held in at a funeral home in Salt Lake City. Had the funeral been held in a Mormon Church, I would not have attended, but would have visited the family at their residence to convey my condolences. I have a strict rule now that I'm Ex-Mormon - I will never step foot in any Mormon Church or Mormon Conference Center and I have changed my will to reflect that upon my death, it will not be in a Mormon Church or under the direction of Mormon clergy.
I've never been in a funeral home so I didn't know what to expect. Inside the home there was a large chapel and to my dismay, it looked and smelled exactly like all of the Utah Mormon Churches built in the early part of the 1970's. Cinder block walls painted white, wooden benches covered in fabric - everything reeking of cheapness.
When I found a place to sit I noticed there were several scattered Mormon hymnbooks on the pews. At first I just pushed it aside and sat down, but then I got a wild hair, picked up the book, turned to page 242 and began twinkling my eyes. I hoped that when I opened them I'd be on Kolob but it alas, it never happened.
The funeral was presided over by a Mormon Bishop of the ward that Daniel lived in. I had to squint and close my eyes to keep myself from rolling them too much. The Bishop continued to spout off how he believed that Daniel had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that Daniel was now in the loving arms of his Savior. I had forgotten the low, rolling speak that Mormons use when talking - that uninspired melodramatic General Authority speak that just makes you cringe.
The best part of the meeting was seeing friends, family and neighbors speak about his life. Even though we were not really in a Mormon Church, everyone ended his or her best wishes with In the name of Cheese and Rice, Amen, or something like that.
It amazes me how much Mormons use funerals as proselytizing sessions. The attitudes are isn't it wonderful that we're not depressed at funerals because we know so much about the afterlife. The Bishop just went on and on about how wonderful the gospel was because they have the One and True Church and that the Plan of Salvation was so wonderful. I couldn't help but think that this man who died - of AIDS - who was a practicing homosexual - was everything this Mormon Church hated. The Mormon Prophet has spoken out against homosexuals that they Have problems. It was sad to know that deep down underneath it all, all the Mormons in the room quietly sat in disgust about the choices Daniel made in his life.
I kept my mouth shut. It wasn't my family, it wasn't my religion - and wasn't my place to make comments and I was careful not to let my disgust of Mormonism get in the way of the nice talks given by friends and family about Daniel's life.
So long Daniel.

| Worst Of Times, Best Of Times, Farewell Jim Hoenie Saturday, Jan 21, 2006, at 11:24 AM REMEBERANCE -GUID- | | |
My Grandfather Jim Hoenie passed away this weekend. He married Wanda during World War II and helped the Allied Forces stop Adolf Hitler. He was one of the few troops that actually made it into Berlin at the end of the War. He returned and fathered three boys, my father being one of them.
He will be buried with full military honors this next week.
I'm very proud to have known him and I wish my Grandmother the very best.

Looks like Steve Irwin died this weekend from a stingray strike to the chest, just off Low Isle in Queensland Australia.
From USA Today:
"Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.
Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when he was stung, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its website.
He collapsed at Batt Reef, near Low Isle and the resort town of Port Douglas, Queensland state police said in a statement. Port Douglas is about 1,260 miles north of Brisbane, the state capital.
A rescue helicopter rushed to the scene but Irwin had died, the statement said.
Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef and said cause of death appeared to be a "stingray strike to the chest."
Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program Crocodile Hunter, which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel."
I always used to like Steve Irwin and watched his show, however; when he took his infant son and dangled him out in front of a crocodile, I lost all respect for him. I couldn't believe he was placing his infant child (who at that time couldn't even crawl) in front of a dangerous animal. Steve may be fast, but anything could have happened. The video itself was insanely hard to watch.
Ahh well Steve, rest in peace.
Know what the most ironic part of this was? The advertisement that popped up on THE WORLD while I was reading his news article:
Life is not without a sense of irony.

| An Old Friend - Neighbor, Mike Kernodle - Dies Monday, Mar 19, 2007, at 06:33 AM REMEBERANCE -GUID- | | |
Today an old friend of mine and a neighbor across the street - Mike Kernodle - died of liver disease. He was on a transplaint list waiting for a liver when he died.
From a local TV station:
"Students and faculty at East are shaken by the loss of Coach Mike Kernodle, who had been a teacher for more than 30 years. His boy's soccer team took state last year while the girls won state the year before.
Many of students didn't know he was waiting for a liver transplant. Jake Cook, one of the soccer players at East High, said that Coach Kernodle looked fine just a few days before he died. "It was devastating yesterday to hear about it because we saw him at practice Friday and he looked totally fine, like he was going to pull through," Cook said. "
"He always had the kids first," Principal Roberts said. "In fact, I remember saying to him, 'Mike your health is, I know you are struggling.' And he would say 'As long as I have the kids in the classroom and the green grass between my toes on the soccer field, I'm a happy man."
I bought my home in 1998. Later that year, Mike, his wife and son moved in. Mike and I would often sit at the edge of our driveways and just talk. When I was digging up my front flowerbed and ran into a 300 pound rock, Mike walked across the street and helped me move it. That rock now stands at the bottom of my driveway as a decoration - something I will never move without help.
It is sad to see that you are gone mike. Farewell.
From the Salt Lake Tribune, his obituary:
Michael Scott Kernodle "Coach K" A noble Viking warrior lost his final battle when Michael Scott Kernodle passed away on March 18, 2007. Mike was born in Chicago on December 27, 1954. He had many cherished childhood memories of time spent on the family farm in Indiana. At Western High School in Las Vegas he played soccer and football. A big, strong, athletic man, he played football as a lineman for four years at SUU, graduating with honors in 1975. He was proud to be in the "Coaching Factory Hall of Fame". During his college years he became a member of the LDS church, which was always a source of comfort and strength. With a passion for knowledge, Mike became an exceptional teacher and coach for 30 years, 25 of those at East High School. He loved teaching world history and was an award winning soccer coach. He had the gift of encouraging students to be their best. He was recently named the Regional Soccer Coach of the Year. With a career full of wins and awards, he said his greatest achievements were the men and women his students became. Mike wrote that his goal in life was to be a good man, father, teacher, coach, friend, and husband. He will be remembered as a man who reached all his goals. The mountains are where Mike felt most at home. Although he was an avid sports fan and wrote beautifully, fishing was his favorite pastime. Mike was blessed with two great loves. He married Deanna Forsyth (later divorced). On July 17, 2001, Mike married his soul mate, Becky Middleton. They lovingly joined families. In 2003 they had a son, Sam, who closed the family circle. His infant son, Daniel, preceded Mike in death in 1991. Michael Kernodle will be missed by those he leaves behind: his wife, Becky; his children, Nicole, Joey, Dallon, Dana, Scott, and Sam; his parents Lela and Richard Kernodle; his sisters, Mary Olsen, her son David; Lisa Mead, her daughter Melissa; a brother Ken (Julie) Kernodle and their daughter Katie; mother-in-law Mary Clark; many extended family, friends and students will also miss Mike, but for now he needs to take Daniel fishing. This weekend I learned that my nurse, Vicki Lynn Crowley, died in a motorcycle crash in Hawaii the last week of February.
Vicki has been my nurse for over five years. She is the first smiling face that always greeted me when I walked into my doctors office. She could take blood from you without even feeling a pin prick.
She was a single mom who had children she was trying desperately to help.
I will miss you so much Vicki. I am so sorry you have passed.
I just can't believe she is gone. She was one of the heroes. She was not supposed to go. Not now, not so soon. She had so much more to do.
Goddamn it. My heart aches terribly for her. I truly loved this beautiful woman.
At first I could not believe what I was hearing. My nurse? Vicki? Died? It struck like a heart attack.
Why? Why didn't you wear your helmet? Now all I can do is shed tears for a woman who was so kind, so full of life.
From Hawaii:
Vicki Lynn Crowley, 51, of Draper, Utah, was pronounced dead at 12:10 p.m. at Hilo Medical Center, police said in a written statement.
About an hour earlier, Crowley was riding a 1991 Harley-Davidson motorcycle north when she struck a sandbag that was in the outer lane at the top of the gulch, police said. She then lost control and struck a wall.
The victim was not wearing a helmet, police said.
They do not believe that speed or alcohol contributed the crash, but have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Officer Wendell Carter at 961-2293.
Sunday's traffic fatality is the seventh police have recorded on Big Island public roads this year. There also were seven traffic deaths at this time in 2007.
I will miss her deeply. She was an amazing woman to me. Whenever I went into the doctors office, she always greeted me with a smile. We talked about my family, her family. We talked and talked.
I cannot believe this beautiful woman is gone. She was, simply
Amazing.
Thank you, Vicki, for everything - everything you did for me. I will miss you deeply.
