The Matrix Reloaded

If you haven't seen The Matrix Reloaded and you're a Matrix fan - what in the hell are you waiting for. Get out and see it while you still can on the big screen.

I created the Matrix. I've been waiting for you. You have many questions, and though the process has altered your consciousness you remain irrevocably human ergo some of my answers you will understand, and some of them you will not. Concordantly, while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant.

Hayao Miyazaki - Brilliant Story Telling Set In An Anime World

Hayao Miyazaki is one of my favorite directors.

Lately I have been getting more into Anime. As I have researched Anime, I have come across Hayao Miyazaki. Tonight I watched Hauru No Ugoku Shiro, or "Howl's Moving Castle". I think it is probably some of his absolute best work.

Of course I cannot forget Kaze no tani no Naushika, or "Nausica: The Valley of the Wind" a brilliant masterpiece of story telling and animation.

Other films of his I have watched include Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi, or "Spirited Away" - an excellent film, and Tenkϋ no shiro Rapyuta, or "Castle In The Sky".

Hayao Miyazaki has no equal when it comes to such brilliant story telling set in an Anime world. These films, rated either G or PG - I recommend that everyone rent and watch - they will carry you away in story like you have never seen before.

I have several more of his films lined up to watch. When my daughter is older and can better appreciate films such as these, I will re-watch them all with her.

Last nite the family watched Majo no takkyϋbin or "Kiki's Delivery Service". Another beautiful film by Hayao Miyazaki. Rated G. Kiki in this American Version is voiced by Kirsten Dunst. It stars Debbie Reynolds, Phil Hartman and a many more.

It is the story of a young witch on her mandatory year of independent life. She finds fitting into a new community difficult while she supports herself by running an air delivery service for a bakery.

Another beautiful Miyazaki film.

Every Wednesday and Saturday night is family movie night. Saturday night is special because we dance and eat steak. With DirectTV we have music channels so we turn on the 80's music on all the TVs and we dance in the kitchen while making dinner. Lexi twirls, spins, claps, gets on all fours and kicks her feet out and wiggles - she is quite the dancer. Spencer either sits in his chair and munches fruit stars, or twirls around with momma or pappa. Then we sit down to oven baked potatoes and inch thick rib eye steaks - barbequed to perfection.

When dinner is finished we always cap the night off with a movie rented from Netflix. Now that we have a 92"x60" bigscreen and a theatre room, we pop two bags of popcorn and settle down with blankets for the show.

Tonite we watched Tonari no Totoro or "My Neighbor Totoro". Rated G it stars Dakota Fanning as the young Satsuki. My Neighbor Totoro is the story of two young schoolgirls who move into an old house with their father - while their mother is sick in a hospital. The two young girls discover a forest spirit named Totoro. With Totoro's help the girls are able to heal their own hearts in anticipation of their mothers' return.

I really enjoyed this film - even far more than Kiki's Delivery Service. Lexi clapped and called out the trains, the rain, the moon and the trees when they grew.

Yet again the talent of Hayao Miyazaki.

Tonite we watched Neko no ongaeshi or "The Cat Returns".

Rated G it stars Anne Hathaway, Elliott Gould, Rene Auberjonois, Peter Boyle, Andy Ricther - and more.

This film is directed by Hiroyuki Morita - another wonderful Japanese director.

The film stars Anne Hathaway as young Haru - a girl who saves a cat from certain death. To repay her, the cat "kingdom" rewards her by (of all things) kidnapping her to marry her off to the cat prince.

A cute film well worth watching for the family.

"Porco Rosso" known as Kurenai no buta in Japanese stars Michael Keaton, Brad Garrett, Susan Egan and many more. Rated PG (cartoon violence - airplane dog-fighting, fist fighting) it is the tale of man, transformed by fate into a "pig man" after watching the spirits of pilots killed in the last air battle he fought. He now makes a living taking jobs to fight off air pirates.

This film is directed by Hayao Miyazaki and rates up there as one of his greats. Great show for the whole family.

Mission Impossible III

This week I turned in two films to NetFlix in hopes that we would receive Monster House to watch for Halloween. Unfortunately, both Monster House and Over The Hedge were on a "Short Wait" list and they sent Mission Impossible III instead.

Rated PG-13 for violence I had to watch this movie alone this weekend. In my opinion, it should have been rated R for scenes of intense violence, but PG and PG-13 are the new "R" of the millennium so /shrug.

MI3 stars that whacky Scientologist Tom Cruise. Since Tom came out telling everyone that Psychology was bad and that medication to help post-pardum depression and other forms of depression were bad - I have lost a lot of respect for him. It took me a long time to even put MI3 on my list of films at NetFlix just because I have such a hard time looking at Tom Cruise and knowing just how strange his Scientology has made him.

Scientology believes that Xenu was the ruler of the Galactic Confederacy which was known as Teegeeack. Ok, that's just weird. Wait a minute, when I was a Mormon, I believed that God lived on the planet Kolob and that our sun (called Shinehah Abraham 3:13) borrowed its light from Kolobian energy. Kolob is at the center of our galaxy and all stars rotate around it (J. Rueben Clark). I used to sit in Mormon Sacrament Meeting and sing "If I Could Hie Unto Kolob", and think about the Mormon God sitting on his throne "up there" somewhere.

Ok, both are whacky - but I'm getting off track for this movie.

Anyway, MI3 is your usual gag of technologically impossible devices and scenes where every stunt goes perfect and lots of stuff blows up. Even though the characters have only 48 hours to get from the United States to Hong Kong and pull off a major theft operation, they manage to have every detail of every building down to the distance between the buildings (in meters no less). I hate this kind of fake technology. CSI does it to us all the time - what, the criminal is not in the video feed robbing the store? Well, let's just adjust the digital film so we can pan to the right and whalla - there is the criminal! What, your 320x200 picture off your cell phone of a squished plant on your boot needs identifying? Well let's zoom in to 800x power and now we can now see the plant cells! Why yes, it's a Taraxacum japonicum!

I hate this kind of impossible technology. I hate it when they make stuff up in order to fill in more film time so we the viewer don't have to think. Hollywood is getting notorious for this lately. You can do this stuff in Star Trek because we assume it's 500 years in the future - but you can't do it now with black and white VCR video fees in the 7-11 or on our crappy cellphones.

I do have to admit that MI3 is better than the first two; it seems to be directed better. Still, the film left me empty because it filled in all of the answers for me. I didn't have to think, I just had to sit and watch stuff blow up.

Here, Tom is pointing at a great place to get Tacos. You can see the place he is pointing to If You Have Google Earth By Clicking This Link. You can get Google Earth Here.

If you were an action buff, I would suppose this would be nice - but it is nothing like the original Mission Impossible shows where you actually had to think. One could always get drunk and watch this show, perhaps it would then receive a better review.

Princess Mononoke, Monster House And Over The Hedge

This week we watched three movies: Mononoke-hime or Princess Mononoke, Monster House and Over the Hedge.

Princess Mononoke, rated PG-13 for images of violence and gore - was my favorite. Of course, Hayao Miyazaki is one of my all-time favorite directors. It stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael McShane, Billy Bob Thornton - and more. I think this is one of Hayao's best epic films - rich, full of diversity - beautiful landscapes and fantastic story-telling. I have now placed this on #2 on my list of Hayao's best next to Howl's Moving Castle. This film is for older children probably 8 and over since it shows gore (like arms ripping off - no blood, but how do you explain that to a 3 year old...) Great Miyazaki film.

Monster House was nothing like I expected. Rated PG this film was far too scary for children under 8 years old. Especially when you have a big house that turns into a monster and eats people. It's the story of a house that is possessed by the spirit of a dead wife - who wants everyone off her yard. Good show, wish we would have had it for Halloween. Great show that is computer animated - and animated well - in a Tim Burton sort of way.

Over the Hedge was a great show. Rated PG - this is one film we will add to our collection. A group of animals tucked away in one of the last nature preserves in a housing development - need to tuck away food for the winter. However; a small raccoon has a different idea when he has to replace items he stole from a bear. Great show, great for any audience - especially the children.

Mah names Mater. Like Tow-Mater without the Tow.

This weekend we watched Cars from Pixar Animation Studios. Another Pixar great.

Actually, we watched it six times this weekend. Once in the theatre room and five times on various DVD players around the house.

Alexis has Lightening McQueen, Doc Hudson, Sally Carrera, Mater, Ramone, Flo and Fillmore - all from her Happy Meals.

Cars is rated G and stars Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Larry The Cable Guy, Cheech Marin - and a whole lot more. We went out last weekend and bought the DVD Widescreen to have in our collection.

Again another Pixar great.

Adam Sandler's "Click"

Last night after the kids were in bed, the wife and I watched Click starring Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, Christopher Walken, David Hasselhoff, Henry Winkler and more. Rated PG-13 for swearing.

Generally I can't stand Adam Sandler's movies. They are full of 8th grade toilet humor. Adam's records he has released are full of stuff I would have laughed at in Jr. High school, but no longer. I will set aside Little Nicky because it had a great cast and it's just such a funny show.

Surprisingly, Click was actually quite good. Adam's immature behavior he displays on film was at an absolute minimum. Click is the tale of a man given a special "Universal Remote" that allows him to slow down, fast forward or jump to any place in his life. While Michael Newman (played by Adam Sandler) enjoys his new remote and new abilities, he quickly finds out it's not all that it is cracked up to be.

The show was cute, funny, serious and touching. I wasn't annoyed at all by the countless scenes of women with perfect bodies and ample cleavage - which seemed to abound in nearly every scene.

However, the one person that made this whole movie for me was Kate Beckinsale. She is an amazing hottie (and she looks great in leather, see Underworld).

Amazing.

Today I watched Kτkaku kidτtai or "Ghost In The Shell". Directed by Mamoru Oshii, it is rated PG-13 for animated nudity (breasts).

This show is very much like Blade Runner as the scenes of future cities and technologies easily compares to such a film by Ridley Scott.

Ghost in the Machine has great scenery. It takes us on a technological journey through the human psyche as tuned into cyber technology. Unfortunately it fails to convey to us the end message that the author whished to present to us. In the end we are left wondering what happened. Who was the ghost in the machine. Who was the Puppet Master. Perhaps in the next film those questions will be answered.

Great anime. Great scenery, great story - even if the ending did not answer any of the questions presented before us.

I'll rent the next one in line and see if it continues the story.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Raged PG-13 for violence.

This Anime film was recommended to me by Netflix as I have searched around for more Anime. Finding good Anime is hit and miss, you go through nearly 10 films before you find one that is somewhat good, and over 20 films before you find a director who is worth viewing other material he/she has made.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is one of the worst Anime films I have seen. While Advent Children is done in computer animation with beautiful scenes and perfectly rendered double-D breasts - it has absolutely no storyline.

If you know nothing of Cloud, Tifa, Vincent, Sephiroth or the rest of the insanely weird cast of Final Fantasy - do not watch this show. If you know nothing of the games you will be totally lost - as I was - and I had cousins watching the film with me to fill me in on the insane amount of details. “This person did this.” “These people are kind of like mini-gods, that is why they can fly, dodge bullets, and do weird stuff.” “That guy was a big boss.” “That dude has no powers except a gun sticking out of his arm.”

Meanwhile, the show itself has scenes of impossibility - like fighting while riding enormous futuristic motorcycles - all the while turning each different way and staying on the bike, jumping up in the air and flying around, getting shot in the head and only having it break only your glasses - and more. The fighting scenes made no sense, and the word used the most in the film was “harrumph” as each character gestured at each other before fighting - it was both nauseating and childish.

No characters are explored. You are expected to understand who each character is and why. There is no character formation or exploration. There is no reasoning as to why everyone is fighting. There is no understanding of the “life force” and why the earth was destroyed. The small explanations at the start of the show give little credence to what is actually transpiring.

I hated this show and will avoid any and all Final Fantasy themed films in the future. Don't get me wrong - the visuals and sounds were spectacular, if I would only have known what the hell was going on - but even at that level, the childishness of the show gnawed at me and begged that I turn it off and walk away.

Curios George

Rated G.

This last Wednesday our family film was Curious George staring Will Ferrell and Drew Barrymore, ET all.

We really enjoyed this film. For the last three weeks I have been reading Alexis the Curious George books. Curious George takes a job. Curious George goes to the hospital. Alexis has loved these books and has asked for them again every night. When she saw the movie she was delighted and it will definitely be one that we will add to our collection.

The movie explores all of the Curious George books and adds pieces of each one - such as Curious George floating above the city on balloons and so on.

My only comment would be that the Man in the Yellow Hat was a strong figure to me growing up. When I read these books as a child, the Man in the Yellow Hat was a man who went to Africa and trapped little George. In the movie, George follows the Man in the Yellow Hat who came to Africa to find an idol to save a museum. In the movie, the Man in the Yellow Hat was unsure of himself and I found this disheartening. To me, the man was someone who came in and swept George away to take care of him - someone who always managed to save George and clean up the messes. In my youth, I saw him as someone who could rescue me from my problems.

The movie is beautiful, the songs are well done and it follows well the books written by Hans Rey and Margret Rey. Originally they wrote the books in 1940, published in 1941 by Houghton Mifflin. Both authors have passed away however George lives on in my heart - and now hopefully the hearts of my children.

Movie night this week we watched Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown. Not quite as good as the original and definitely not worth purchasing, but a good show for the kids nonetheless.

Ice Age 2 starts off where Ice Age 1 left with the animals in a "bowl" surrounded by ice that is going to melt, burst and kill everyone in site. The animals need to make it out, and of course they do.

Cute show, but eh, feh, rent it don't buy it.

Same cast as before, same stuff different day.

You, Me And Dupree

Last night Kim and I watched You, Me And Dupree. Rated PG-13 for showing Owen Wilson's butt and a few swear words.

The premise of You, Me and Dupree is that Carl Peterson (Matt Dillon) marries his boss's daughter, Molly (Kate Hudson), and then his best man, Dupree (Owen Wilson) stays with them after losing his job and all his earthly possessions.

You, Me and Dupree is bad. First and foremost, it's tedious. It has no real direction. Things happen, and a few minutes later, it doesn't matter that they've happened. You sit there and watch 108 minutes of meaningless, witless anecdotes that involve the same people, but have no real bearing on their lives.

As far as the characters go, they really aren't characters, and they really don't go anywhere. We never learn how Carl and Molly met, or why they love one another other than that they have sex a lot. Carl says stuff like, "Molly is the best thing that's ever happened to me," but we see no proof of it. Dupree is a little eccentric, but it's all been done before. I don't know anyone in real life who is as boring as the rest of the characters with the exception of Carl's father-in-law, Mr. Thompson (Michael Douglas). But neither Dupree nor Thompson perform with enough absurdity to make the movie work.

The movie is too long and unfunny to be a comedy. And it's not that I'm opposed to body humor, it's that the movie doesn't even try to be funny for huge segments. I laughed with the rest of them when Dupree broke up Carl and Molly's intimacy because of his emergency with the "crapper." The movie needs more of that, instead of trying to sustain drama and characters that aren't there.

You, Me And Dupree is mindless show and if you take it that way, you'll laugh and enjoy it, walk away and say "that was cute", and forget it. The most annoying scene is when Dupree (Owen) is masturbating in the front room. Molly comes down and catches him and it's an akward scene. I wonder how many takes it took before Owen got that one right.

Last weekend I watched Ninja Scroll as it was suggested to me by our cousin Jeff.

Rated PG-13 it really should be rated NC-17 as there is anime display of rape and nudity.

This movie was different as it followed the life of a ninja for hire as he fights an old nemesis.

For anime buffs this is a pretty good show as it has a good plot, follows a good storyline and keeps you interested.

This film is not for children as it shows full female nudity and scenes of female rape.

Good anime, one of the better films I have seen.

Rated PG for violence, etc.

This is the sequel to Disney's prior show and being a Disney film - they spare no expense. This was great to watch on the big screen because of all the special effects - especially those of Davy Jones and his crew.

Johnny Depp is a master at playing a gay pirate and continues his role in this film.

From start to finish, it practically flaunts the fact that it is pure and utter entertainment, comic yet breathtaking. The slapstick comedy involving the various sequences on the cannibal island and the water mill are amusing, the scenes at sea with the Flying Dutchman and the Kraken draw gasps, and, as ever, the antics of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow brings endless pleasure. Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann does her share too, but Orlando Bloom as William Turner is still somewhat...wooden, perhaps because of the insipid character that he plays. His (almost idiotic) chivalry and goodness simply does not click with the mischievous magnetism that Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann delivers. He still does amuse from time to time, however. The supporting cast is truly stellar; Bill Nighy as Captain Davy Jones, Stellan Skarsgard as Bill 'Boostrap' Turner and Naomie Harris as Tia Dalma are simply brilliant. Bill Nighy delivers his lines with aplomb, smacking his lips as if he relishes each syllable. StellanSkarsgard is completely believable as the wretched Bootstrap Bill, a man who has fallen to the depths as far as he can go, and yet can still find the strength to endure it all in the love he has for his son, William. Naomie Harris is just as charismatic as the former two, but her charisma is not menacing or stoic but mysterious and even alluring. When she grins her black-toothed grin, one cannot help but grin along with her. In the end, 'Dead Man's Chest' is a roller-coaster-ride of a movie that thoroughly exploits every minute of its two-and-a-half-hour running time.

Rated PG for mild peril and rude humor.

This is a cute show starring Kevin James, Danny Glover, Wanda Sykes, Sam Elliott and more.

It is the tale of a cow and his son, and how the son must group up and face the fact that he must be in charge and take responsibility. Lots of music in this show and lots of cute scenes.

I just didn't understand why every cow in the place - male and female - both had udders.

/Shrug no big deal. Alexis loved it so much that we kept it an extra week so she could watch it several times per day.

My 3 year old daughter really enjoyed this film and giggled and smiled when she saw Flower, Thumper and Bambi playing together in the forest. Kim and I have not seen this movie for so long we could only remember tiny bits and pieces.

Disney has taken this 1942 film and cleaned it up as much as possible and digitized the soundtrack. The film still looks like something that was grainy black and white and then colorized. The colors and textures are washed out and grainy.

Still, my joy was seeing my daughter smiling and that is all I needed.

Rated NR.

Another Anime based on a Matrix theme. The show moved far too slow for me and I just don't feel like renting the other four discs. I didn't like the anime style - but at least it didn't have annoying characters played by 12 year old kids.

I'd say skip it.

Superman Returns

I have always been a big fan of Superman. With Superman Returns I was pleasantly surprised. Starring Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey.

I first saw superman when I was in 7th grade. That of course was in 1982, 4 years after Christopher Reeve played it on the big screen. Our school had obtained a copy of it and during Christmas Break (when we were all still in school) they played it on a big screen in the school auditorium. I was thrilled and everyone was excited.

Superman Returns is as if you had stepped out of the 1978 movie and straight into another 1978 movie - with better special effects. Superman leaves the earth in search of remnants of his home world - and if there were any survivors. Finding none, he returns to find the earth is in peril again from us puny humans - and Lex Luthor once again is off ready to hatch another diabolical plan.

Brandon Routh so nails Christopher Reeves it's frightening. In some scenes, it is as if you were once again watching Christopher. His mannerisms, walking and acting mimic Christopher quite well.

The chemistry between Kate and Brandon worked well (of course, Kate is a hottie).

The scenes, cinematography and art work are reminiscent of the 1978 film. Like I said - it is as if it were the original Superman, or at least, Superman II.

I really enjoyed this 2 and a half hour film.

Keanu Reeves is one of my favorite actors, of course as I am a major Matrix fan. A Scanner Darkly was a bizarre psuedo-reality film done in rotoscope that follows the lives of four friends living in the same house.

All four are drug addicts. The setting is in the future where a new drug called "Substance D" is the new drug of choice. Keanu plays a futuristic cop who purposefully tried "D" in order to try and find its source. A by-product of the drug is split personality and due to his absorbance into the drug and its culture - lives the lives of two worlds - and cannot separate them from each other.

Woody Haroldson and Robert Downey Jr. make two of the most interesting characters while Winona Ryder supports. The conversations between these characters is fascinating and I strove hard to understand and figure out exactly what the director was trying to convey.

I walked away from the film with no real questions other than stating, "Well, that was odd."

"They might have the appearance of riches, but beneath the clothes, you find a man... and beneath the man you find... his nucleus."

When you watch Nacho Libre, immediately you realize it is fully the work of Jared Hess. The way the movie starts is nearly identical to the way Napoleon Dynamite started.

This is show is so simplistic - yet brilliant. Kim and I laughed about this show the entire way through.

I have never cared for Jack Black. I don't like his characters, his mannerisms nor his acting style - but this film suited him perfectly. Jared Hess does a great job of cinematography on this film. It is as if you had been transported out of Preston Idaho into someplace in Mexico.

If you enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite, then you will enjoy this film.

Some of my favorite quotes:
  • I was wondering if you would like to join me in my quarters this night... for some toast.
  • They think I do not know a buttload of crap about the Gospel, but I do!
  • Your only job is to cook. Do you not realize I have had diarrhea since Easters?
  • Ok. Orphans! Listen to Ignacio. I know it is fun to wrestle. A nice piledrive to the face... or a punch to the face... but you cannot do it. Because, it is in the Bible not to wrestle your neighbour.
  • I ate some bugs - I ate some grass - I use my hands - To wipe my … tears.
  • Those eggs were a lie, Esqueleto. A LIE! They give you no eagle powers. The give you no nutrients!
  • I'm not listening to you! You only believe in Science. That's probably why we never win!
  • My mother gave it to me before she died. It was her lucky machete. You can have it.
  • Precious Father, why have you given me this desire to wrestle and then made me such a stinky warrior?
  • Where are your robes, Ignacio? They were... a stinky. These are my recreational clothes.
  • Do you remember when everyone was shouting my name, and I used my strength to rip my blouse.
  • Ignacio, I have been looking all over for you, where have you been? I have been here. I have been sleeping. In a frilly shirt and slacks? They are my PJ's

The Fox And The Hound And Other Disney Classics

Our movie last night was Disney's classic, “The Fox And The Hound”. We did not get more than 10 percent through the movie before Alexis was bored and wanted to watch something else. So we threw Pixar's “CARS” in and watched that again on the big screen.

For now I am going to start holding off on Disney's classics until Alexis matures a little more. For now the depth and breadth of Disney's films are beyond her and she desires digital films rather than old pen and ink animation.

I love the new digital films as well because of how crisp and clean they are on the big screen. I borrowed all of the Harry Potter films, Star Wars and a few others from my Father In Law to watch. I have seen them all, but only on a little 54” screen (somewhere, my Mother In Law rolls her eyes). Hey, if you haven't seen a movie on a 80 inch by 45 inch screen in HDTV with full surround sound - well, don't be talking smack then about your little TVs with little screens.

Alan: you been enjoying your new home movie watching party palace?
Infymus: oh yes
Infymus: gonna watch star wars 1 through 3 this weekend
Alan: Sweet
Alan: I'm helping my sister and her husband get theirs all wired up
Infymus: nice, they doin a projector?
Alan: No, they got a plasma screen to stick on the wall.
Infymus: oh a tiny little screen eh?
Alan: No, a big one
Infymus: cool! how big is it?
Alan: I think it's a 46 inch
Infymus: will they need glasses to see it?
Alan: LOL

Alas, ye with little screens, suck it.

Today Alexis and I watched “Porco Rosso” again and we will probably watch it again tomorrow. She likes it, but she likes Totoro much better.

My friend Chowder let me borrow his copy of “Dune” - the original by David Lynch. I watched it over the course of a few days each afternoon after work. I really loved this film when I was 16 years old. It is interesting when you have an HDMI DVD Player and a 1080i HDMI projector or equivalent with high resolution - just how badly these films were put together.

Films made before 1995 are still excellent - every single mistake they made in editing, in graphics, models and pastels are totally visiable. You can see the outlines around characters standing in front of green screens. You can see how ships and other flying objects are pasted on top of the film. Today computer graphic programs allow these kinds of things to be integrated seamlessly. Unfortunately some people like George Lucas go way too far and make so much of the film CGI that you can see it is obviously fake.

I still love the old films.

I've been out of touch lately with most Anime, mostly, because the vast majority of it sucks. I've had the movie AKIRA on my list for a couple of months and only this weekend did I finally get it and watch it.

Directed by Katsuhiro Τtomo, this is one of the best animes I have seen in a long time. Those of you who have either Netflix or other DVD-By-Mail system and love good Anime - I would highly recommend this one.

Rated R, not for the kiddies, as it shows one short upper (female) nudity scene and violence.

I will definitely be checking out the rest of this director's anime.

I just finished watching Hou Yan Jia, or, "Fearless".

I was so moved by this film. I think that it has to be one of Jet Li's best performances. Jet performs as Hou Yuan Jia, a young, reckless man who prizes fighting above all else. Personal tragedy in his life leads him on a path of discovery, in which ultimately leads to enlightenment.

I think this is some of Jet's finest work.

If you haven't seen this and you enjoyed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Hero, you should not miss this film.

I was moved to tears so many times during this movie. It will be added to my collection.

Thank you Jet Li, as this is your last film.

Pan's Labyrinth

I just finished watching pan's labyrinth, by Guillermo Del Toro. This film is not for children of any age as it depicts grotesque violence and adult themes.

I was, however, fascinated by this film as it showed a young girl who while on a journey to a Spanish town (in Spain) in the 1940's following World War II, is entrenched in fairy tell. Although the author and director of the film do not really show you the direction the they are going - it is left up to your imagination as to where they are going and the film follows this course.

The young girl in this film is visited by a sprite, and then a faun who tells her that she must go on a journey to fulfill her premise as a queen of the underworld. Meanwhile, reality is that she is in a sort of camp under the control of a captain who is trying desperately to kill a band of Spanish rebels.

The young girl of maybe 9 years of age, follows a path that she must do in order to prove that she is not mortal, but immortal as the daughter of the underworld. Meanwhile, reality is mixed with fantasy as people are beaten, killed and in other means, disposed of.

This film is frightening and gruesome, and yet at the same time, this film is intriguing and I could not take my eyes from it. In the end, the director leaves us with the possibility that the fantasy was indeed true, all the while, it may not have been.

An interesting watch, I think that you should see this, but not in the accompaniment of small children. Be prepared for scenes of grotesque violence, and yet scenes of imaginary beauty.

I very much liked it.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

I picked up Harry Potter #5 on Tuesday and have watched it little by little this week - fininishing it last night. I'm dismayed. I should not have read the book. I feel like the movie is so disjointed. So much is missed; it feels like the movie doesn't make sense at all.

I don't know, it just feels so weird. I know that you couldn't possibly put 800 pages into a movie, but certain scenes just don't make sense. How would you know that the decrees put up by Umbridge were and why they were? They never explained why the room you don't need will always be there when you need it most is… Also what is going on with the Weasly twins isn't well documented. I can't believe they left out the swamp they made! They never really explained why Hagrid when to find the giants, and they never showed his love interest!

It was as if I went through the book, and tore out page after page after page. How could anyone watch this movie and know what the hell went on? Harry was angry at everyone the whole book, even to the shunning of his friends and telling Dumbledore where to shove it - but none of that really came out in the movie. When Sirius was hit with the killing curse, he was hit in the air. The door was broken and laying on its side - not straight up, he fell out of the air and into the door, not the way they made it. There were dozens of more rooms in the Ministry Of Magic, and it was all set up as a maze to keep people from stealing things - except this wasn't defined at all.

I feel like the director expected you to have read the book, and this is just a quick narrative of it.

I stopped reading book #6 to read another book, and now I think I'll hold off on the series.
