January Once Again

Well, January is upon us, a new year. I went out into the cold garage to get a diet Coke and peered out into the back yard. It's 29F outside right now and we're in the middle of an inversion which could last for weeks. That means no sun and sub-freezing temperatures. That translates into depression. The air is too cold and too dangerous to be out in because it is full of polutions. We all start to get into cabin fever waiting for the thaw to come.

Well, onward into a new year.

Dr. Carl Sagan Was Quite Moved By This Image Of Our Tiny World

On October 13, 1994, the famous astronomer Dr. Carl Sagan was delivering a public lecture at his own university of Cornell. During that lecture, he presented this photo:

He stated:
"We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

February is that month where it is no longer in the depths of Winter, but not yet into Spring.

We had a storm this week that at least cleaned the smog out of the air. I hope that it will be warming up here quickly.

Alas, it is time to pay taxes again. Taxes, ah yes, Taxes.

I long for warmth.

Tragedy Unfolds At Local Shopping Mall

Last nite an 18 year old man walked into Trolly Square (a shopping mall about 6 miles from my house) and opened fire. Five were killed, including the gunman.

This picture shows the tragedy as a police officer - gun drawn - stands over the body of a woman who is dead. She was not in the wrong place at the wrong time, the gunman was.

This world is so full of tragedy. Tragedy heaped upon tragedy. Any limited amount of searching on the Internet will reveal thousands if not hundreds of thousands of pictures of death, carnage, war, cruelty, hostility, intolerance, unhappiness.

I often wonder when I'm leaving for work in the morning if I will survive yet another day in a world so full of madness. I hold my children closely every night and am grateful for every moment I get to spend with the screaming little sweeties.

What a tragic loss.

Media Whores And The Media That Whores Them

Some media attention whore died last weekend, a woman by the name of Anna Nicole Smith. While I could care less about the woman who, well, I think everyone knows Anna's history…

They estimated that shortly after her death until the ending of the weekend, nearly 80% of the nation's media was focused on her. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, young men and women are killed in Bush's “War On Terror” - and very little attention is brought to the lives of each and every one of those individuals who served their country.

I find it obscene.

This week, ME Cohen did a political cartoon that I found brilliant.

Spring Fever Is Starting To Spread

Yesterday the temperature outside reached 52°f degrees. I got out Alexis's tricycle and she rode it all around the deck. Spencer crawled all over the deck pushing his truck around. Today I'm going to set up their huge plastic playhouse.

But Mother Nature is playing a cruel trick on us. It is still only February and that means snow at any time without warning. I just hope it stays warm enough that it rains in the valley and dumps the snow in the mountains until the grass is green again.

For now we will bask in the sunlight and play in the back yard together.

I could not locate the story behind this picture of a mother, touching her daughter for perhaps the last time before she goes off to fight in Iraq.

I was moved to tears by this picture because I too have a daughter near this age. I think this picture speaks louder than words.

This weekend I finished off the theatre room. RCWILLEY came and measured and I was exact on my measurements. Total cost to carpet with the best possible pad is just a hair under $400 dollars. That's pretty good in my opinion.

I played a little bit of EverQuest II this weekend, but I just could not get myself to play when there was sunshine outside and my daughter tugging at my shirt.

Alexis and I watched Flushed Away, The Polar Express and CARS, all in one long afternoon of popcorn, diet coke and fruity snacks. It was so enjoyable to be by her side watching her favorite shows.

When Alexis laid down for a nap around 4pm, I picked up a book by my favorite author, Stephen R. Donaldson, and read three chapters. His latest book on the series that I'm reading is coming out this October, so sometime during this summer I need to re-read the first book of the 3rd series of Thomas Covenant.

As for gaming? I don't know what to say. My account with WOW expired two days ago and I moved the game off into storage. My account with EQ2 expires here shortly and quite frankly I can't see any reason for staying in there except for my friend Eric - who continues to play and enjoy it.

I've told my gaming friends that my gaming days were coming to an end. After 25 years of playing computer and console games, I have had a nagging feeling for quite some time that my gaming days were coming to a close.

I just don't find myself as interested in going out and killing X number of these, taking X from X to Y, or finding X, Y, or Z which increases my character's X, Y or Z.

It's old hat. Old hat I am starting to find less and less interesting as the days go by.

I see my children, growing up and the time that I spend with them is very precious. I feel that if I don't spend the time with them now, regrets that I have when they are late teenagers will be filled with “What If?” If I spend the time now, there will be far less “What If” because I know that I will have done whatever I possibly could now with no regrets.

I am just not that interested in new games. Games with bugs. Games that cost money and cost time - time that I am finding I have little of.

I want to do so many things this year. I want the ultimate garden. I want to slide down the slides with my son and daughter. I want to go to Oregon and throw rocks in the ocean with my daughter, and hug my father.

To me the computer - something that has been a huge impact in my life - is starting to become the thing I wish for the least. There is so much to do, so much to see, so much to yet experience - and gathering X number of items from Y zone to give to Z mobs just doesn't seem to be cutting it at all.

There is still snow out there, over a foot of snow on the deck at least. It has been warm, but not enough to melt it all yet. I long for the park. I long for long walks to talk with my best friend - my wife. I long for closeness with my family.

I long for summer.

And on the wall beside me as I type this, the pendulum swings back and forth, measuring off half seconds as time progresses beyond me. Time that is shorter than I comprehend.

Klytus, I'm bored.

Birthday In My Sites

It's only three days before my birthday and I have a raging head cold. The weekend has been planned since January and Kim and I are going out to Wendover Nevada for some serious gambling and relaxation. My son has been sick with sinusitis and now both Kim and I have gotten it. Gah! I friggin hate colds!

This weekend Alexis was watching me drive around in Grand Theft Auto SA, and she wanted to drive. So I let her sit on my lap and drive around. To my amazement, she was driving the cars around the town with very little effort. When cars were on fire, she'd get out and run to avoid being blown up.

So I go upstairs for a while and let her play.

I come back down a little while later and she's out on the street, beating people up, taking cars and driving around. When the first person yelled out (That Kim could hear) “You asshole!”, that was it.

Kim gives me the oh-so-serious evil eye, and with a frown of “I'm in trouble”, I uninstalled the game. Alexis was quite upset, but she'll get over it.

Oh well.

/Shrug.

Happy 39th Birthday, Infymus

I am not having as hard a time thinking that I am 39 years old as I was thinking I was 30 years old. But now 30 years old was of course, 9 years ago, and I'm starting to think towards the big FOUR-OH.

I'm 39 now. I'm a successful software engineer - and I manage a crew of great guys who get the job done without me being a Nazi manager. I have two kids - 3 years and 1 year old. I've been married 15 years - but together straight 17 years. I own my own home, have very little debt (as I'm careful with that) and my wife and I are in good health - so far.

Thirty Nine. Say it aloud. THRITY NINE. I'm not hip to anyone under 30 anymore, as I'm seen as an "Ew!" now, so does it matter how I dress, or look, or act?

I think, possibly, that I should not give a damn anymore about those kinds of things.

My kids, the little smarties, are going to outrun me before I can even think twice. Alexis amazes me at what she can do and how fast she learns.

Spencer, still only 1 years old - loves to be cuddled. I came home from work today and I just held him while he pressed his little head against me and snuggled. This is something I could do forever, just snuggle. I cannot explain the feelings experienced when I have both my little ones in my arms at the same time.

I run dozens of websites, I have hundreds - if not thousands - of contacts in the world and email so many of them regularly.

While I may analyze my situation, my life and my age to death - I think that if I could stand back for a dozen years, I would find that things are just as they should be - and all is well, yes, all, is well.

Hello Thirty-Nine, there is no avoiding you - so let us be friends.

Today I'm getting some chores done and getting the house ready for the Grandparents to stay here to watch the kids. Tomorrow, the wife and I will be in Wendover Nevada with a drink in one hand, and either a handle or a set of cards in the other. No kids for 24hrs, private suite at a Vegas style hotel - ah, yes indeed.

What An Amazingly Relaxing Weekend

We left for Wendover Nevada at about 11am and made it out by 2pm. There we met my wife's sister and her husband, and then spend several hours with them. They had already been out there for quite some time and had to leave for a funeral.

After they left, my wife's aunt made it in town with her boyfriend and his brother, who joined us from Price.

We played all night into the wee hours, and then slept in on Saturday late. After we checked out, we hit the $15 dollar buffet and I had at least six plates of food from succulent prime rib (that was mooing at me), to fresh shrimp, a Denver omelet, and a whole lot more. When that was done, I sat back, put my feet up on a chair and drank a cup of coffee - and breathed a sigh of relaxation.

What a wonderful weekend we had. We didn't win, but we didn't loose and we didn't break even - with what we won, we didn't spend as much as we thought we would (by about $300).

I'm refreshed, I'm happy to be home with my children in my arms, and I'm ready to go back to work and get back in tune.

I had a fantastic birthday - thank you everyone who was with me.

It Pays To Shop Around

I just bought two new 2007 cars. My car insurance carrier was Geico. The rate increase? $536 dollars per year more than what I was paying for my Legacy GTs. I was outraged. So I said to Geico - ok, add the cars, but I'm going to shop around. They didn't care - "Thanks for using Geico, goodbye!"

So I called around and Allstate could cover me for $568 dollars LESS per year than what Geico was offering - with the same exact coverage numbers.

Then I called Allstate local and asked if they could cover my house. They dropped my homeowners cost by $421 dollars a year - giving me a deal on both because I would be insured both home and auto under them.

That is a saving of $989 per year on insurance costs.

Cha-Ching.

It pays to shop around.

It Is That Time Of Year Again, Time For Allergies

I used to love spring.

I was raised by the Utah Foster Care Program, or, by The Utah Division Of Family Services. I was taken from my mother and placed into foster care when I was 3 months old. By the time I was 14 years old, I had been moved around through 28 homes.

The 2nd to the last home I was in was the longest - 5 years. And those Foster Parents lived in Park City Utah - Timberline to be exact.

I climbed every mountain in Summit Park and Timeberline, swam in every beaver pond, learned every flower and plant that could be eaten and a lot more.

When I left that home and came to my last foster home in Salt Lake, it was an abrupt change for me. Warm weather and no snow comes to Park City Utah in about May. In Salt Lake City, it can come in early March.

My transition from high mountain to low valley was amazing. I could not believe how warm it was, and how the snow simply melted away at any given point. The summers were incredibly long - as the warmth would last all the way into deep October. In the mountains, snow hits in early September and is there for a very long time.

Slowly as I lived in the Salt Lake Valley I began to get allergies. With each year passing, my allergies got worse and worse. When I was in 6th grade, I began noticing that I could not play with the kids or do sports in school as my breathing suddenly starting becoming hard. Teachers and my foster parents told me I was faking it to get out of playing. I hated it. I would sit on the sidelines, gasping for breath.

When I was adopted by my father David, he noticed I was gasping for air after playing outside. He took me to a doctor and within a few hours, I was diagnosed with Asthma. I was given an inhaler to use for Asthma attacks - and it changed my life forever. Suddenly I was able to play again because when the attack came - I used my inhaler - and I was able to go on playing.

Fast forward 25 years, my Asthma is under control now. I use Advair 250/50 once per day and I have two other inhalers to help me manage my Asthma.

Alergies, on the other hand, suck.

Right now Cedar, Maple, Cottonwood, Oak, Birch, Willow and Sycamore are in the moderate to Extra High category. This means I have to be on 24 hour Allegra-D pills or I cannot function. Sneezing, watery eyes, and congestion - you name it.

I used to love the smell of spring - the warmth, the Robins, the freshness of it all - but now I loathe it. I know it is a renewal of life, of earth, of summer - but without allergy medication, I can't even see it. With every medication you take there are side effects of it. Allegra causes insomnia; lack of appetite and long-term use causes depression. All of which I could do without.

So welcome, spring, I'm glad you're here, but damnit, I hate the pollen.

For a look at the current pollen levels in Salt Lake City, see http://www.intermountainallergy.com/pollen.html

Spring Is Temporarily On The Low-Down

Spring has slowed down considerably here in Salt Lake as we have had a cold front moving through the area. That is good for me because the pollen count has dropped to low under all counts. Perhaps tonite I will not have to use my allergy medicine - do I dare go without? Perhaps, but if I wake up at 2am sneezing, I'll have wished I hadn't.

Work has been very busy lately and I haven't had a lot of time to write. I have had weekly interviews, bringing in contractors to take over a position of my DBA who is leaving, and conducting business and meetings for the big bosses who are out for the week. I quite enjoy it, really.

I think my greatest reward is coming home to my family. When I come in the house, both my children come running into my arms. Often they will busily search my pockets for tick-tacks as I buy them weekly and hide them in my coat pockets.

Today Spencer came out first to say hi to his daddy. When he was done getting a hug, he began to walk down the hall. Lexi came around the corner, caught my eye and smiled (as she always does when we see each other), and came running for me. Spencer, seeing that Lexi was about half a second away, turned around and literally jumped, doing a 180 turn and plopping into my lap - as if to tell Lexi - HA HA. Well, I do have two arms and was able to give big squeezes (as Lexi calls them) to both them. Then I spend the next fifteen minutes just holding them as they tell me about their day - or Spencer tries to stick his fingers up my nose. It's all good - and when I press their little faces against mine, I know true happiness.

I have been posting a lot of my Oregon 2004 videos set to the Vangelis album of “Oceanic” lately. If any family or friends would like to have a copy of the original video, in NTSC full frame and sound (a beautiful DVD), just email me (see the Contact Infymus on the menu).

I will be putting all of the videos from the album up on YouTube over the next few days.

It has been a rough April so far. I think the hardest part of April has been the allergies being so out of control. Last nite I got about 3 hours of sleep total because one of the biggest side effects of Allegra-D-24 is insomnia. Without the allergy medicine, I can't function. I can't see, can't walk, can't talk, can't do anything because I can't stop sneezing and it wears you down so hard it turns you into a blubbering mess.

Spring, spring go away, never come back any other day.

Spencer has been coughing now nightly since December. We are starting to wonder if he has asthma like his father. Thursday he goes for his monthly checkup but I'm not sure they will be able to find out anything. My asthma was environmentally created. I grew up in homes where both parents smoked and had numerous pets (cats, dogs, birds). I didn't get asthma until I was around 14, so Spencer having it now seems rather unlikely. Still, the poor little guy has been on cough medicine on and off for weeks as we try to find out what is going on.

It doesn't help that he picked up a cold this week and so did Alexis. She has been running a 101 degree temperature today and her little nose is running. Ahh the joys, they could have picked that stuff up anywhere - even from neighborhood kids.

As a family we continue to watch our movies and for the moment we have been re-renting some of the ones that the kids love, like Totoro, Charlotte's Web and so forth. Lexi loves Flushed Away, Sponge Bob and Jimmy Nuetron. Spencer, well, he just sits down in my lap and watches whatever we're watching, but I have a hunch his favorite show is the same as mine - Cars.

Work goes well although I'm extremely busy. This week I'm still interviewing potentials for a DBA position I'm trying to fill and getting further and further into management. I'll have more to announce by the end of this month in that regard - and no Irwin, it hasn't anything to do with you.

My yard needs work, I have so many plans, but so many other things to do. Two weeks ago I got the lawn mower ready for summer, got out the tiller and tilled the garden up. I have the sprinkling system set up for the garden and half the weed block down. I have to get the rest put down this weekend, but we can't plant until at least the second week of May (frost danger here in Salt Lake).

And so life continues forward.

Firefox Restore Session Is A Piece Of Shiznit

I hate Firefox's new "Restore Session State" feature in 2.0. It just outright sucks. You turn off your machine with the browser up? You get a restore state message when you run Firefox again. A lot of times you get the same stupid message.

I found a way to stop it.

Firefox 2 comes with a built in Session Store feature that saves your session data including open windows and tabs, window size and position, and text typed in forms. Session data is stored in the “sessionstore.js” file, located in the profile folder. To disable this feature, go to About:Config right click and make a new boolien, name it browser.sessionstore.enabled and set it to false.

That settles that.

Once again everyone in the house is sick. Somehow, somewhere, Spencer picked up a really nasty cold and of course we all now have it. Personally, I think it's time to stop him from going out and hanging around the neighborhood.

My passport came in yesterday. It took a total of 15 days to get here - of course it was expedited as it generally takes 10 weeks. The cost? $300, but I had to get it soon as the plan was to send me to Sydney Australia to be a part of an upgrade process with a customer in New South Wales. As much political wrangling goes on in any company, after the 15 days had transpired the company (after spending the aforementioned money) decided another person would be more suited to go.

In many ways I was looking forward to going, but at the same time, dreading having to spend three weeks out of country away from my little family. So much planning was already going into the trip and so many things already were done. I had to buy luggage, I had to get my passport, I had to get a $10k credit card to make sure I was covered for anything and I had to make plans for the paying of bills and what not in my absence.

Now I'm just here, with a cold on a Saturday morning, feeling like my head is under water.

Ah well.

I met MJ back in 2001 when we were working on a .COM. He is a very unique guy. Yesterday I sent him the following:
Mike, don't let what you perceive the view of others of *you* to influence your life. You are an amazing and intelligent man. The more you let what you perceive of others to influence you, the longer it will take you to grow. Take what you know and take your strengths, and achieve the goals you want. The rest will come in time, even if you feel alone so much of the time. Your "hability" is not. Yes, the "norm" is not and cannot be "you" because of what you have gone both physically an mentally, but you can and will achieve beyond what most will - just because you have the drive and the intelligence to do so.
I read his blog all the time and comment, from time to time - some of it being deleted by MJ - but no big deal. MJ, you are the man.

MJ, I think you will make it just fine.

This is why I hate spring so much:

Yes, and I'm on the highest possible dose of allergy medicine you can take. I'll take side effects over not even being able to function.

Pork is like Chicken. Take care of it. Keep it clean.

Soak it in A1 BBQ sauce and Italian Dressing for about 20 minutes.

Then throw it on the grill for about 10 minutes on high -watch it so it doesn't burn. Then, after 10 min, cut it a little. Is it cooked through (Ie. PINK is gone?) take it off.

You won't regret it.

Lying In The Cool Grass

Saturday night is always family night. Well, every night is really family night, but we work especially hard to make it more special for the kids.

We set up the Dora tent in the back yard and played chase. Spencer is getting better at kicking the beach ball around and Lexi has quite the arm when it comes to throwing.

When we got tired, Alexis, Spencer and I were lying back in the cool grass, watching the clouds go by. While Spencer does not understand what is going on, gets up and wanders around, Alexis and I found letters and animals in the clouds that went by.

"Do you feel the grass on your arms and legs?" I said.
"Yes." She responds.

"Do you smell the sweet smell of spring?"
"Yes."

"Do you see the birdies flying way up in the sky?"
"Yes."

I held her little hand. "This is what summer is all about sweet heart. This is what makes me happy. You, me, momma and Spencer."

Palpitations

This weekend I spent four hours in the emergency room as doctors poured over blood tests, EKG results, x-rays and just watching the machine that goes “PING”. They were trying to find out if there was anything wrong and why my heart was palpitating.

I've had heart palpitations since I was a kid. Usually they go away within 24 to 48 hours, but this weekend, it has been five straight days. After I couldn't stand it any longer and from constant prodding from the family, I went down to the ER and spent time there as they looked me over.

I have a childhood phobia of needles. So one nurse has hooked me up to the EKG machine and she is about ready to start the test. The next nurse comes in and says, OK, I have to put an IV because this is a heart related case. As soon as she said that, my heart rate went from about 78 bps to over 140, and my blood pressure jumped from 128/82 to over 179/130. The nurse doing the EKG just about popped her eyes out. The increase in BP totally threw her test.

Even so, the blood tests came back negative. When you have a heart attack, your body produces phosphokinase, creatine kinase, lactase dehydrogenase or troponin t. I had none of these, of course.

I was sent home after about four hours and told to follow up with a cardiologist. They could find nothing wrong, other than a visible palpitation.

Next week I will follow up with a cardiologist and wear a Holter monitor for a 24 hours to monitor the condition and see what can be done.

For now, I just live with the discomfort of double heart beats every few beats.

Clean Bill Of Health, Regardless

Today I saw a cardiologist who after poking and prodding said I had a clean bill of health.

His basic interpretation was that our hearts have a nerve that sends an electrical signal across the heart to beat. The heart has thousands of receptors that beat when they are told to. Occasionally, one or several of those receptors decide to send the signal themselves, and this causes a double heartbeat.

He said with it only coming on once or twice a year, not to worry about it. If it became an issue where it was making me uncomfortable, he would prescribe something for one or two days maximum.

For now, it is gone and I'm feeling better. Indeed.

Only One Day Left

Only one day left until we leave for Southern Oregon. Well, actually 1 day, 13 hours, 16 minutes and 54 seconds.

I've already programmed all the destinations into the car NAV system. 600 miles the first day, 400 the next, with two kids in the back wanting this and that.

It has been really difficult trying to get into a mindset of getting out of here. Work has been more difficult the last three weeks than I can remember. So many things to do to set things in order before I go. Then realizing that I will be working while I'm on vacation, joining conference calls and writing emails.

There is still a ton left to do at home to get ready, pack and so forth. Our neighbors are staying at our house while we're gone to watch TV, mow and water lawns, take care of our garden and collect our mail. It's nice to have someone you trust staying over to take care of things.

Since my dad has a WAP router at his house, I'll be updating the website during the two weeks I'm gone. Pictures here and there of what is happening whilst we travel.

Well, I better get out of here, I have a lot to do.

Where Have I Been?

I have been very busy lately and I haven't had time to post anything.

Summer is here and so I am spending a lot of time with the family, going to parks, playing in sprinklers, tending to the garden (of which is doing wonderful right now).

In my spare time I'm working on AvoBase as our customer base is growing. What little free time I have after that I'm playing Lord Of The Rings Online.

Work is going well and is very busy. We are starting development on our new Delphi 2007 4x project very soon, and being the manager of a group is always a tough, as you have to make all of the final decisions.

We are in the dog days of summer. It's 103F outside right now so it is quite hot.

Today I filed my paperwork to buy a 2008 Mazda Miata MX-5 hard top. In three weeks I will finalize the paperwork so that it will be on order. I'm keeping my CX7 and my CX9 and getting the MX-5 for a summer car. During the winter it will be parked and covered. Funny thing is, though, that even though I am ordering it now, I don't get it until March of next year due to the availability of them. That's my late - late - Christmas present and Birthday all in one. *Smile*

Off to make dinner for the family.
