| We Like To Move It Move It Posted: Oct 31, 2007, at 05:50 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Kim and I have been talking seriously about moving for the last four weeks. We have spent time looking through the home magazines for the last few weeks and centered our attention on one home in West Jordan.
It is beautiful. .32 acres, 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths, built in 2003. Fireplace, open family room to dining room to kitchen. 3 car garage, laundry on the same floor - 3700 square feet - fully finished, fully landscaped - a beautiful home. Kim calls it a doll house. We are putting down an offer tomorrow we are hoping they will accept.
If all goes well, we will be moved in to our new home before Christmas.

| First Offer Made Posted: Nov 1, 2007, at 05:30 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Today we made our first offer on the house in West Jordan. We gave them until noon tomorrow to send back a counter-offer, acceptance or decline.
This house is amazing. Kim's mom has been bugging her to try and find a place in Draper or Sandy. She came today and saw this house - and everything changed.
"YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS HOUSE!" She said.
Of course.
The back yard is huge. With .32 acres, it is a gorgeous home and is totally finished top to bottom - including the whole yard.

| Offer Accepted! Posted: Nov 2, 2007, at 01:11 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
The sellers countered our offer today and we accepted. We came in low off their price and they met us nearly half way, dropping $15k off the price.
We accepted!
Here is a view of part of the huge basement - my future theatre room.
Plus pool table and wet bar all in one.
WE ARE SO EXCITED! We will be closing on the day before Thanksgiving and funding to the buyers the day after Thanksgiving. They move out that weekend, and we will begin moving in the first week of December. After we are moved out of our current home, we will then come back, clean it top to bottom, paint, patch and do whatever is needed, and then put it on the market in January.
Woot!

| Did We Just Buy A House? Posted: Nov 3, 2007, at 08:59 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Kim stopped yesterday in the front room and said, "Did we really just buy a house?"
Here is a shot looking from the front room through the dining and into the kitchen.
Yes, we did. We have been so excited it has been hard to sleep the last few days. Kim and I have already been going over where we are going to put furniture, what kind of flowers we are going to plant next year, and how I am going to design my new theatre room.
Speaking of the theatre room, this new one is going to be a bit trickier, but I should be able to pull it off. I sat watching a movie yesterday in my current theatre and was saddened about it. True I'll make a new one, but it will take me at least a year before I get it finished, meaning, movies just won't be as good until it is done. If you don't have a theatre room, you have no idea what you are missing. You just can't watch a show on a 46" plasma TV or even a 60" plasma and call it theatre. You have to go for a 92" or higher screen with a quality projector, quality screen, and good surround system with no less than a 12" base box. On top of that, you can't just put it in a big open room and call it good as you have to measure all of the acoustics to make it sound right. There is a lot involved to make it right but once you do, you'll never pay $10 bucks a ticket to go out again.
Well, things should settle down now as I work through the tremendous amounts of paperwork to set up loans and finalize on the work. We are already fully pre-qualified for the entire loan amount and just need to sign the paperwork. If all goes well, we will be close on the 21st, and fund to the sellers on the 23rd. They move out the next week and we will begin moving in around the 1st week of December. Once our house is on the market and sells, the proceeds from that sale will drop the entire loan amount down to less than $50k giving us a nice $300 payment for as long as 15 years, or far far less if we pay more. Not bad having a $300 payment for a $400k house.

| Signing Papers Until My Hand Hurts Posted: Nov 5, 2007, at 06:13 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Today I signed papers until my hand hurt.
"You promise to give us your next unborn child."
"You promise to give us your heart, liver and lungs, should you fail to pay."
"You promise..."
Stinkin lending companies. But what else can you do? Until we sell our house, we have to take out loans in order to purchase the new one. Then once we sell, we pay off all the money from the loan down to a very small amount.
We are already thinking about moving companies and what it will take. We're thinking somewhere around $1000 bucks.
We close on the 21st. So two more weeks of just laying low and living life as we always have.

| Inspection Complete Posted: Nov 6, 2007, at 05:42 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Today the inspection on our prospected new home was complete. The only issues we have with it are minor and the sellers will be taking care of those before we sign off.
No big deal. We will now be closing by the 21st, and moving in around the 27th of the month.
Will update more later.

| Visual Inspection For Appraisal Done, Home Owner Insurance Set Up And Approved Posted: Nov 12, 2007, at 04:47 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
They finished the appraisal of the new home last Friday, and today our Allstate guy (who rocks, BTW), called me to say he finished up the insurance quotes for the new house.
Here's another view of the front entry-way. We have already begun packing. Kim's dad is bringing in lots of boxes which will save us a ton. We are going to be packing now for the next three straight weeks.

| Funding Complete, Closing Date Set Posted: Nov 16, 2007, at 03:13 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Today we received word that all the funding is complete and the title work is nearly ready.
The closing date was originally set the day before Thanksgiving, but because most banks won't be doing much the day after, they decided to move everything up to Monday. We will close on Monday at about 3pm, and fund by next Wednesday.
We should be able to start moving in by next weekend.
Time to step up the packing.

| Boxes, Boxes Everywhere Posted: Nov 18, 2007, at 09:01 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
I think for me there are two concerns. One is that the payment is going to be two and a half times what my house payment was before. The other is the unknown of moving into a neighborhood where you don't know anyone, don't really know where anything is, don't have a comfortable routine to and from work - all that stuff.
The first concern will disappear once we sell our old house. Not a big deal, I can handle the payments until then. The second, well, we do have friends in the area, some as close as four blocks away. My wife is a social butterfly most of the time and I don't see her having any issues finding friends. I hope the children acclimate quickly and enjoy playing at the new home. I've been in this home now since 1998 - 20 years as of February 2008. I was twenty years old. Kim moved in here in 1992 the weekend we got married. So there is a lot of history here.
The other concerns will come in time as I have twice the commute I used to, and most all of it is going to be highway instead of the regular ride I used to have. Sad, because it would have been really enjoyable to drive my MX5 with the top down across Foothill Drive. It's a pretty drive, unlike 90th South which, well, aint much to see.
We have been packing left and right. Took down all of the decorations from the kitchen. Packed up all of Alexis and Spencer's books. Today I'm packing up my three entire book shelves of books downstairs and getting the cases ready to move. We cleaned out the garage and re-stacked everything so we would have better room to get in and out.
The closing date was pushed forward to Monday at 3pm, so we will fund Wednesday and begin moving in by Sunday. Thursday is turkey day, Friday we will start moving some things over, Saturday is Mom's 60th birthday - so it is going to be a busy week and not a lot of time to seriously get packing.
Hopefully we can get the movers to come on Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week (27th or 28th) and move all of the big ticket items, and anything we could have gotten into boxes by then. The rest we will be getting a 24 foot U-Haul for $45 bucks a day plus $.79 cents per mile. That means one trip from our house to the new house is $17 bucks. That's why I'm going for the larger U-Haul. It has 1400 cubic feet and we could really get everything inside in one trip or maybe at the worst, two.
We shall see.

| Closing Complete, But Will We Fund In Time For Thanksgiving? Posted: Nov 20, 2007, at 06:54 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
We were supposed to close on Monday, but the paperwork did not come through in time. In fact, we were at the closing company yesterday, but were sent home after the last of the documents did not come through.
Today our closing officer said we had several chances to get closed and funded by tomorrow at 5pm. All of the banks are closed on Thursday and Friday for Turkey Day, so if nothing funds, we will not be given the keys to our new house until Monday at the latest.
Again, our closing officer said, I've heard you've got several chances. Fat chance, Big Chance
and that was that.
We signed all of the papers and we are done. The payments cometh in January and will kick my ass.
But for now, the house is ours, we are done. Monday we will get the keys by the WEEKEND of next week, we should be completely moved in.
It is just too bad that we don't have the keys in our hands to show family members who will be in town for Turkey day. Oh well, we can drive over there and show them around the house, but not inside.
Ok, now, to concentrate on Turkey Day and then more packing.

| Well, Funding Didn't Happen Today Posted: Nov 21, 2007, at 03:53 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
We were hoping that the funding would go through today and they'd hand us the keys. No such luck, it was a slim chance anyway.
I've gotten the water, gas and electric turned on and in my name and next week we will do the phone.
Went to the house today and met the prior home owner. He took me on a tour of the entire house, showing me where everything was.
I was amazed at the number of trees he planted, and how he was able to identify each one of them. There are nearly two dozen trees in the back yard alone - from oak, to sycamore, to cherry and more. The back yard itself is 107 feet long. I can't wait to see the trees in bloom this spring.
The house behind us just sold for $500k. If we could get that, I'd have over $100k in cash in my pocket.
We'll see.
Well, we will fund next Monday. We are moving in next Wednesday, so I'm going to take Wed-Thur-Fri off of next week to get the moving done.
Soon, we'll be in our new home.

| Officially Moved In Posted: Nov 29, 2007, at 09:49 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Yesterday it took 8 ½ hours for the moving company to move us, at a cost of $1100 bucks. Costly, yes, but it was so worth it as they moved probably 70% of the house over, including every large piece we had (even tiller, snow thrower)
We are very happy, but we are so tired.

| The First Meal In Our New House Posted: Nov 29, 2007, at 08:00 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Today we had our first home cooked meal in our new house. Here we are sitting down to dinner, together as a family:
Today I replaced all of the light bulbs in the house with 100 watt fluorescent bulbs. Odd the prior home owner had 40 and 60 watt bulbs all over the house. The rooms, hallways and bathrooms were so dim, I could barely see. Why don't people like brighter homes?
These 100 watt fluorescent bulbs only take 13 watts of energy and they give off more lumens than a 100 watt regular bulb would. Plus they have a 3 to 7 year shelf life and give off only 5% of the heat. After a 100 watt bulb is on for 10 minutes, you could not handle it. With a fluorescent bulb (100 watt), you can pull it out easily and it isn't hot. So
Brighter, costs less, less heat (won't cause fires like the others do) and lasts longer.
I'm also a digital thermometer nerd. I have four digital thermometers around the house. I noticed immediately that the house heating thermometer was off by four degrees. So when I set the house to be 66 for the night, it was 62 degrees when it was done. The day temp of 69 was only 65F. It was a cheap, crappy piece of crap that didn't even have digital swing or daily updates. This house is four years old and no real thermostat?
I went out and spent $100 bucks on a new one - the same one I had in my old house, only the newer one which now has a remote control (woooo) and shows humidity. Suddenly the furnace was not running all the time (thanks to swing) and the temperatures came back to normal.
Ahh new house, new costs, trying to make it our home.
Tomorrow we are heading out at 9:30am to pick up the 24 foot UHAUL truck. Driving that up to our old house and we are going to load every inch of the last of the house into it.
And that should be that for now.

| First Snow Of The Year, Almost All Moved In Posted: Dec 1, 2007, at 01:19 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Today it snowed 5 inches at our new home. I snow blowed the first three, but another two has fallen, and me and my snow thrower are out of gas.
Yesterday was absolute hell. I rented a 24 foot U-Haul truck and picked it up at 10am. Drove it to the house and began packing. I was absolutely worn out already from moving the prior day, and this was getting to be too much. The family stopped by and we moved all of the rest of the boxes out of the house, but in the end, we didn't get it all. We are still going to have to stop by the house each day from work to grab boxes and clear it out.
Before we left our new house, we took Kim's car because she had to drop me off at the U-Haul place. I lock the door and close it. She asks me if I have the keys, to which I reply, yes, I have her keys. Unfortunately, her house key wasn't on the ring, and we were locked out.
"Where is your key?" I asked.
"It's in the bathroom." she said.
"What, is it going potty???" I responded, extremely upset.
It cost me $135 dollars to have a locksmith come out and open the door for us at 7:30pm that night when we had the truck loaded and ready to unpack.
My garage is freaking full, and only my car is parked in there right now. We have to do some arranging to get her car in there now.
So tonight, we are going to have dinner bar and try to relax, even though I can't find anything as it is in some box, in some distant corner of the house.
Oh, and did I mention, it is December? Only 24 days until Christmas!

| TV Installation Complete Posted: Dec 19, 2007, at 06:35 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Here is our 60 inch plasma TV that I bought weeks ago, finally attached.
What is amazing about HD (1280 dpi) is that you can see the grey hairs on Brian William's ears.
Creepy?
Maybe.

| The Wind Never Stops Blowing In West Jordan Posted: Apr 20, 2008, at 02:47 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
The one thing that I've noticed about West Jordan Utah is that the wind is always blowing. During the winter, trying to snow-blow the driveway meant a crapload of snow back in your face. The snow would pile up against the house. You'd open the door and the snow would be four feet high.
Today a storm front is approaching and it has been blowing hard all day long. About 1:30pm we had a wind gust of nearly 90 miles an hour (as recorded on my Davis Weather System). It picked up the trampoline from the neighbors house and threw it into our back yard, smashing it onto our children's play set.
I can't believe it didn't break the fence, but it broke the play set. It pushed the set over a foot and bent the metal frame causing stress fractures and breaking some 2x4s.
I'll have to talk with my insurance agent to find out what is covered because the play set is worth a couple thousand dollars.
My neighbors pulled together and we took the top parts of the tramp apart. Then we lifted it up and threw it over the fence back into the neighbor's yard. There we set it upright, but I'm afraid the tramp is toast.
Freakin West Jordan.

| My Gas Stove, Finally Installed Posted: Apr 22, 2008, at 04:37 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
At our old house I spent almost a grand on a gas oven that had five burners and a convection oven. I searched everywhere to find a gas oven that had equal size of burners, after a few weeks, I found one at Sears and bought it.
I had it for about a year before we moved.
The new house has one of those goddamn electric flat panel ovens. I absolutely hate those kinds of ovens. They have two settings: On
Off
And that is it. Shit burns so easily and you can't change the heat in an instant. If you want to turn it down, you had better just take it off the heat.
Today I shelled out the $$$ to have the gas line routed through the garage, into the kitchen and hooked up our old stove.
I can't tell you how much better it is to be cooking with gas. It is ON when you want and OFF when you want. When you turn it down to simmer, it is instantly on simmer.
Anyone want to buy a Whirlpool Electric stove that is only 3 years old? I'd almost give it away.

| Working On The New Yard Posted: Apr 27, 2008, at 05:14 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Yesterday we worked almost 9 hours painting the old house. We finished everything except the kitchen. Next weekend we will finish that AND get everything off the property. The house goes up for sale the Monday following that.
Today I planted the fifteen or so plants that I transplanted from the old house. Peonies, day lillies and more, I dug them out first thing on Saturday and moved them over here. Now they are planted and being watered. Also got the tramp up.
Here is me in all my Sunday glory - keeping out of the sun.
Still need to till the rock laden garden. Down here the soil is nearly 100% clay. Worthless. The garden is full of rocks and weeds.
So much to do.

| Back Yard Fire Pit Posted: May 26, 2008, at 08:56 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Last night we lit the fire pit for the first time. With the stars out, it was just like camping. Next time we will be ready with marsh mellows and hot dogs.
Taking advantage of it, I burned at least 8 cardboard boxes that I couldn't get into the recycle bin.

| Garden Tilled, Grass Is Greening Posted: May 31, 2008, at 07:58 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
I had to stop at Home Depot yesterday to buy a new weed whacker. My 20 year old whacker works when it whacks with whacky whacker wick, but its wick wickered whack and left me wilted. And hauling a 100 foot electrical cord around my huge back yard - and to the old house - was getting old. So for only $70 bucks I picked up a new whacky weed whacker that is noisy as hell but does the job.
While I was there I couldn't help but pick up some tomatoe plants. So I tilled the garden, fixed the sprinkler system to the correct way it should be, and got the cages ready. I'll plant them tomorrow. The previous owner had kicker sprayers that were not effective and I replaced the whole thing with my old system.
The grass is sure starting to green up. We have had a lot of fun playing in our new back yard.
I think I've found a way to boost my spirits, and that is to get myself into my yard. Get my hands in the soil, plant flowers, enjoy the days off and get out of the house. Now I am starting the seeds of molding this house and yard to my liking - and it really helps lift the mood.

| Garden Doesn't Look So Good Posted: Jun 9, 2008, at 08:19 AM Stored Under Topic: HOENIE HOME 2008 -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
We have had the worst winter I can remember since 1993. On top of that, we haven't had summer yet. Our average temperature right now is supposed to be in the 90s, but we have been in the low 70s during the day, and 40s at night.
Last two days I've lost four tomato plants and four cucumbers. They can't take the cold.
If it doesn't warm up soon, we are going to loose everything.
What the fuck is up with this weather?
