| "Please Come Back" - Mythic Asks Me To Play Dark Age Of Camelot One More Time Posted: Feb 23, 2006, at 03:49 AM Stored Under Topic: GAMING - DAOC -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
Mythic, the makers of Dark Age Of Camelot sent me an email yesterday saying I could have 30 days free if I'd just "come back" and try again. I thought to myself, what the hell, it's free and I have the client and codes. So I sat down and installed it, patched about half a gig and started a character.
When I appeared in the land I completely understood why I stopped playing this game. The interface. DAOC has one of the worst interfaces I've ever seen. Upon initial startup, the mouse is only used for pointing and clicking on things - not movement. Even if you set the mouse up for movement, initially it's set up on reverse axis - but you can't change that once you're in the game.
Most of the graphics and mouse settings are done on the "options" screen before you get into game, not while in it. I spent about a half hour cursing aloud because of how bad the interface was and how difficult it was just to find the main menu. Your standard keys like ESC or F1 - nope, nada. So I began by hitting every key on the keyboard until I found out it was :.
Pretty soon someone in game noticed that I was walking sideways into things and cursing and lended a hand. With a little coaching I was able to setup my mouse and a few other keys. Even so, I find the entire interface - player screen, inventory, skills, groups - chat box - all of it, completely archaic and very difficult to set up. At least with Everquest II you can move them around, adjust them, change the opacity, font, color and more. But not with DAOC, it's just cumbersome.
I decided I'd give it one more hour of time, just in case I didn't miss something.
I missed nothing. The interface was so hard to get used to and keys that I have in more popular games like World of Warcraft and Everquest II were just missing.
After an hour, I gave up. I just couldn't enjoy it the way I wanted to.
The landscape was interesting, but void of the general items you have such as shrubs, grass and bushes. The textures were "painted" to look like grass and the entire engine feels "dated".
I know DAOC well from the outside because I kept track of DAOC Emulators for nearly five years on the Smithys Anvil.
No thanks Mythic, appreciate the "please come back", but I won't be coming back.
