I'm an avid car fan. I've had six new cars in the last five years. I took my 2002 WRX Wagon from 227hp, 217tq to 285hp and 305tq. I took my 2005 Legacy GT Sedan from 350hp, 350tq to 320hp and 350tq. I love cars and feel that cars are an extension of our personalities. This topic covers only cars in general. See individual topic layers for general cars.

| Went Down To See The New WRX STI Posted: Jun 21, 2003, at 09:40 AM Stored Under Topic: CARS -GUID- Posted By: Infymus | | |
I went down early this morning to Mark Miller Subaru in Salt Lake to get a look at 1 of 4 new STI's they have in stock. 1 silver, 3 blue. All of course have already been sold and are awaiting delivery to the owners - two of whom are out of state.
At a first glance, the STI looks like a beefed up WRX. 3" exhaust (although 2.5" underneath), DCCD, 17" 225x45 Potenza tires, 2.5 engine with a slighthly bigger turbo, pink badges, dang near foot high fin on the back, Brembo brakes (nice) and more buttons on the inside.
I got in and sat down, adjusted the seat. Noticed that there was not a stock stereo (this one on the showroom floor). In all it looked and felt like an STI that someone had modded up.
The engine bay was open so I was inspecting the intercooler. Looks like it's the same size as the WRX. Immediately a salesman comes up and asks if he can help me. To test his knowledge, I asked him right off if the turbo was a VF22 or a VF30. I am not shitting you, the first words out of his mouth was "It's a twin turbo".
I blankly stared at him for a moment and then immediately wrote him off as an imbicle salesman. "Where's the 2nd turbo?" I asked. He didn't know. Of course he didn't know...
I asked him what the price tag was on the STI since all four STI's had their original pricing manifests taken off. He said $37,500. I asked him why it was so far over invoice. His response was that they had "dealer additions" added to the STI. I asked him what the addition was and he said "We put in a different stereo."
I started to argue with him that the price was not justified and he told me that not a single dealer was selling them at invoice and that any dealer that did - was stupid. He proceeded to tell me that dealers in California were marking the price on the STI up by over $10,000. His impression was that the STI was selling it'self and the dealer could get whatever they wanted because the buyers were willing to pay whatever. And he stated, "With only 300 of them being made spread out over all the dealerships in North America, good luck in finding one unless you want to pay $$$."
He then walked away from me and started joking with another salesman.
Here I am, a customer who has purchased no less than FIVE cars from this dealership in the last eight years. FIVE. I bought an LLB Wagon and a WRX Wagon last year and I'm looking at an STI - this guy just walks away.
I felt deflated - like the salesman just didn't give a damn what I thought because the STI was god's gift to the Subaru Dealership and they could take the customer for whatever they wanted.
Personally I cannot justify getting an STI at this point.
