I have a '99 Honda Civic HX coupe. Real nice, gets around 500 miles to
the tank. Since I bought it, it has some really nasty steering habits.
It pulls to the right or to the left, depending on which direction you
turn the wheel. Oh ya? If I steer right, the car goes right? (chuckle)
Really... If you are going 40 on a straight road and let go of the
wheel, you stay straight. If you nudge it right just a hair, it will
begin steering right, but then stay pulling to the right - without
somewhat going straight again. Same with left, nudge it a hair to the
left, and it goes left - and stays left. On the freeway, sometimes I
"wobble" left and right trying to find the middle ground between left
and right. If there is a little bit of wind, I will end up correcting
and sometimes overcorrecting to get my steering straight again. If you
hit a small bump at 65mph, it can "bounce" you enough that you have to
correct your steering again. In fact, I hit a good bump at 70mph and
when it pulled hard to the right, I over-corrected and ended up halfway
into the next lane. Scared the hell out of me. Wind is a real big
problem, in that this car weights what, 2500lbs? You get a little wind
and you are blown all over the road - and with the steering as it is, it
can make driving 40 miles to and from work one hell of a ride.
I've been told many things... "Oh that's Honda for you." And what not.
The dealership put it up on the racks and said the alignment was fine.
The tires are inflated at 30 front, 29 rear (as per door panel). The
tire manufacturer - Firestone, put it up on their racks and said it's
all fine. The dealer said they could loosten the rack&pinion, but I am
afraid to do that for long term affects.
It's NOT fine! It's driving me crazy and I almost feel like trading the
car in for something different. I owned a '98 Honda DX hatchback and it
did NOT behave this way under the steering.
Anyone else have this problem or am I just crazy? Is it the tires? Rims?
Suspension? Rack&Pinion? Driver?
